Halo 3 helmet problem - keeps changing by iteslf!

I play SWAT on Halo 3 a lot and recently I've been having a problem whereby I choose the small Elite head (aka Flight), which shows as such in my profile, but when I'm in the game I somehow have the massive helmet on (aka Combat). It's annoying me as the big helmet is easier for the enemy to headshot.
Anyone else had this issue? Have you managed to fix it?
