PS3/HDMI - I'm Confused?

The 80GB PS3 doesn't come with a HDMI cable, this is fine I can buy one as a part of the deal on Amazon but the reason I am confused is that I currently have a 360 and have hooked it up to my samsung hd ready tv and have it set up this way since I bought the console back at launch but I have never bought any sort of HDMI cable for the 360 I plug it into the tele via the coloured connectors (you know the ones? blue, green, yellow, red, white etc)

So the big question is, and it is slightly embarassing if it is true but have I been running my 360 all this time in non HD?

Obviously when I get my PS3 in a week or so hopefully I want it running with HD I imagine this is quite easy to set up on PS3/TV?

You have your xbox connected with a component video cable. This is different to HDMI but will still do HD.

but not 1080p from components as i understand it, so if its a proper hd tv then you should invest in an hdmi or you wont get the full benefit.

Yes it is a "proper" HD TV so a big FAIL for me I'll get a HDMI with my PS3 bundles then

Component can do 1080p if your TV can. The RGB connectors will carry an HD signal, as long as you have your xbox set to ouptut one.

You can also get a component cable for your PS3 if you don't have HDMI inputs on your TV.

I have 2 HDMI ports on my tele but have connected via component, if that makes sense.

Nothing wrong with that, again, as long as you have the xbox set to output either 720p, 1080i or 1080p. I run my xbox over component and it's just fine, as is my PS3 over component.

Simple answer = yes, but real answer = no..... to get true HD you need the quality of the HDMI cable

i have my ps3 connected via hdmi and my xbox was connected with component, imo the ps3 looks much better than the xbox did running the same games.

to put it as the gamestation guy said, a ps3 without hdmi is like having a ferrari but only being allowed to do 30mph.

Ah yes, the gamestation guy. Experts on everything they are. So much crap gets talked about HDTVs, consoles and how to connect them.

The fact is that there are a lot of advantages to HDMI (single cable, proper HDCP support to name two) but to suggest that picture quality with HDMI is significantly better than component is misleading, and quite frankly wrong. The Ferrari analogy is complete rubbish.

That being said - given the option I'd go HDMI!

Visually it's very hard to see the quality difference between digital hdmi and analogue component at 1080p resolution. Only when doing say, web browsing with lots of fine high detailed text you would notice a difference, imho.

When I upgraded to an Xbox Elite, the first thing I did was ditch the use of component cables and start using the HDMI.

The second thing I did after seeing what it looked like, was ditch the HDMI and go back to component as the picture just didn't look as crisp through HDMI.

I know it is down to the individual, but I have heard a number of people stick with component for the 360 over HDMI ??

As for Gamestation staff, although there are exceptions to the rule, they usually know nothing !! I asked for a Europe release date on a game the other day (I know for a fact it is already out in the US for the 360), but they told me the game is not coming to the 360 at all ?!?!?

I told them it was already out in the US, they just said "probably April then"

Well i have a PS3 had it connected via the normal style cables that go in the scart socket when i first got it. ( i didnt no you could do it with HDMI ) when i did connect with HDMI the graphics are certainly better. Will never change back to the old way of connecting.

Go HDMI mate i only have a cheap cable and its better so its worth the few quid extra you have to spend.

You went from SD to HD, so obviously the graphics would be better.

I think the discussion is about the differences between Component and HDMI. Component carries an HD signal, as does HDMI, hence the difference is negligible.

I suspect most of the misunderstandings have the same root cause. People don't realise Component is not the same as Composite.

That's a limitation imposed by the PS3, you can carry a 1080p signal over component, you just need something capable of receiving it (i don't think all hd sets will handle it either)
