a broadband connection
turn on xbox, it will connect, then handhold you through the setup. takes 5-10 mins. You should get a 1 month free trial of the 'gold' membership, after that you drop down to silver (no online gaming, but you still get free downloads etc.).

I bought a 13 month gold code from ebay for about £29, rather than from microsoft for £35
i used this bloke (no affiliation), he emailed me the code, i tapped it into the xbox and jobs a goodun...
