PS3 dead - what next?

Ive got an assortment of questions Id like to present you guys wtih.
My 360 died 18 months ago. I played lots of movies on it, laser presumably burnt out(?) as it loaded games, but not movies. The same has now happened to my PS3, although it didnt play movies but loaded games for about a week, it now refuses to load anything. Not sure what the problem is.
Id be keen to get it repaired, as Im only 50% of the way through GTA4, would rather not loose the hard disk. And the hard disks are not swappable, am I correct? Can I buy a USB key and download my saved files from the main system interface, which works? Ive never tried, but dont have a USB key, only compac flash cards.
Where is the best place to send it for repairs? What sort of problems have you chaps had, and what were the repair costs, and general waiting times?
Not sure if I should just buy a 360 - Are they still as unreliable as they were 18 months ago? I ask, as I miss live - that was better than the PS3 offering. And I only have a small collection of bluray movies. Not sure what to get or do. Part of me wants to stick with PS3 to enjoy collecting/watching HD movies.
One more question - when are the new next gen systems due for launch? I dont read up on games/systems any more, but seem to remember people thought the lifecycle of these current machines was going to be 4-5 years, how long until the next-next gen machies are due for launch? Im not holding my breath, just curious

yes, you can save the game saves onto a USB stick. This is not a unique problem and from what ive seen (myself included) it is not difficult to get a replacement. I took mine back to where I bought it from and it was changed on the spot - even if it is out of warranty Sony are pretty good at replacing them.Playstation Customer Service is 08705 99 88 77

Thanks very much.Previously, games wouldnt load. They would freeze the system on loading.
movies also wouldnt load.
Whilst on the phone with PS3 support, I managed to get COD & GTA to load and play just fine.
We got a CD to load fine too.
Movies however would not load.
We also established that because I turned the machine off at the back, its likely that Ive corrupted the system, which is now refusing to play movies because the corrupted system doesnt know how to recognize low-def format...
I was told to do a system restore which will wipe my hard disk, and uncorrupt my PS3
Surely if games did load, then didnt, and still wouldnt load after 30+ tries... the fact that games now do load indicates there is a problem with all disks, not just low res DVD's?
What do you guys reckon is the likely outcome of a system restore, given the intermittent natures of the problems above?

Install Yellow Dog while you are at it as well
You can Backup all your Saves to Memory Stick quite easily. There is not actually that much Saved to HardDrive other than Updates which you can get again and Content which you may have Downloaded.
Just make sure on the Saves.

Yup, Drc said that too, second post. Thats good service, I was surprised but glad to hear it.Gonna try and wangle the gamesave backups, reset/restore tonight... then fire up the unit and see how well (or not) the thing is behaving before deciding what to do next.
Before the 360 and PS3, Id never owned a console which failed to work, the whole "breaking down, returning, repeat, etc" syndrome is tedious, especially as it seems to happen to everyone now with all systems.
Sony replaced my PS3 which began getting errors on disc load. It would say "80010514" and refuse to load anything; apparently, this is to do with the Blu-ray optic going up the swanee. I went through the whole system restore/reset to factory settings thing.
Mine was almost a year out of warranty. The guy on the phone originally quoted £150 to repair it but when I started getting a bit annoyed, he said they would swap it with a refurbed unit for nothing. Excellent service as well, the courier turned up two days later with a fully reconditioned PS3, and took mine away.
