Forza & NAT settings...
Discussion
Following grevious frustration getting into Forza lobbies over the weekend I've been looking into why it is I'm suddenly getting fail to connect messages after months of no problems.
Suspecting a problem at my end I checked my router and saw it had been automatically firmware updated on Friday night.
Google gave me a ton of reasons as to why this would upset Forza, so after furtling the router I managed to open the correct ports and allow open NAT settings again. Great success.
Or not.
Although I could now get into most lobbys run by the general population I still couldn't get into the PH lobby. More google searching then tells me that Forza is peculiar in requiring all machines in a lobby to talk directly to one another rather than a host server.
The way it is configured is that if somebody joins a lobby in which everybody already has open NAT but they have moderate or strict settings then anybody who tries to join after that person must have the same NAT settings as them.
It's probably the case that everybody here already knows this and I'm preaching to the converted but bugger me what a bag of s
te that is.
Incidentally if anybody is using a BT homehub and has problems there's a useful link here

Yeah that does suck. I read up about some of this when i had problems shortly after buying Forza and a couple of other games. Thankfully since owning my Belkin wireless router, i haven't had any issues. 9 times out of 10 now, its normally the xbox that throws up a problem with the hardware, rather than the connection status.
Which IP settings are you using on your router? Just wondered as i fiddled around with this when I had some problems, and the connection has been Open without any issues ever since.

CyperP - The IP address for the 360 I have set at 192.168.1.64 with ports open as per Xbox Live instructions. Any suggestions welcome.
Wildcards - Some of the advice on that link conflicts with advice given elsewhere regarding using the preset Xbox Live option in the Devices menu. I ran out of patience with it last night so chose the preset option, I'll get around to trying to set it up myself at some point to see if that makes a difference.
What pisses me off is that the damn thing has worked absolutely fine until this point.

Babu, is your current NAT status open? Or has it changed to strict?
The IP config shouldn't be too much of an issue, providing it has a static IP. Personally, i've never had a homehub, so i'm not sure of the settings it uses. Is your xbox using a wireless adaptor, or have you just used a network cable?
Just trying to figure out why it may be having continuous problems..

Thanks Cypher.
The Xbox is on a static IP and the router is set up to look for that IP every time.
I've run a network test but as my Xbox is on NXE it doesn't allow me to see the NAT status. From what I can gather though if there were a problem then the Xbox would tell me after the test so I assume the NAT is open.
I've tried it a few times this afternoon and it is letting me connect more often than not now so I think the router may have been set to Strict controls during the update on Friday which I have now reversed by resetting it.
All I have to do now is hope that nobody with moderate or strict settings gets into the lobbies I want before me, great isn't it?
