My PS3 has died.

Yep. Was just playing GRID, and the picture started to judder, then the screen goes blank, the PS3 bleeps a few times and starts flashing a red light at me. After a couple of seconds of being confused at why my Chevrolet Lacetti is no longer pounding round Istanbul Park, I press the on/off switch - the red light stops flashing and becomes solid red, switched off. I try and switch it back on on the controller - nothing. I try switching it on on the console, and the light turns green for a second, then momentarily goes yellow, and then flashes red again with a few beeps - nothing on the screen. I do a bit of research and find that My 60gb release model contained a chip from the PS2, which can't handle the heat of the PS3, and packs in - apparently a common problem. I rang up Sony, they said that because mine is out of warranty, what they would do is exchange my dead one for a new 60gb one, charge me £145 for the privelege, and make me wait 5 days for my new one to be delivered.

To say i'm not happy is an understatement, although after ~4 years and probably thousands of hours, i'm not really too surprised its given up the ghost.

I should be back online on monday/tuesday, all being well.

RIP PS3 #1, you will be missed.

It's funny you were playing Grid because that's the only game that's caused my PS3 to have problems, it used to freeze all the time and I just gave up in the end.

You should've bhed at them on the phone for longer - said how you'd bought nearly a hundred games and how disappointing this was, that you'd gone with the PS3 because you thought it was a more stable and reliable console than the xbox 360 and that your friend has had his 360 replaced out of warranty for free multiple times, asked to speak with one of the managers at the sony place and said that you couldn't believe they wanted 50% of the value of a new console when you'd already invested so much in the PS3.

You can get serious discounts if you argue the toss. I'm also close to certain that the PAL PS3's had no PS2 hardware in them and that the backward compatibility was software/emulation only. It's raised some concerns over my own system actually.

Yeah I guess, I suppose I was still a bit confused as whether it was properly broken or not, and the console is pretty old and has had a fair bit of usage in its time so I wasn't too surprised it broke.

Its the second day I have had it... I did think that it had something to do with it. Thats a bit rubbish.

I'm sort of waiting for this to happen - mine's also an early model..

Haven't used it much lately, but 6 months ago I would have quite happily strolled out to Game and bought a new one if it died - if only to get back to CoD4 Still, £145 for a new 'un isn't bad, direct to your door as well.

i think i rememeber reading somewhere they just need good ventilation.

Thats why i'm confused, the ventilation where my PS3 is now (at home) was much better than at uni, where I had to have the window open if I wanted to use it without it dying from overheating. Saying that, I have just got a new sound system which is another thing which puts out a lot of heat, so its quite warm in that part of the room, and not much of a breeze can get in through the window.

I rang up a local repairer to see if I could get it fixed for less, but he said that he couldn't be sure that it wouldn't break again - apparently the original PS3's had their connections done in silver, which hardens over time and can break in heat. Sometime after my one was produced they changed the stuff they used so that this problem didn't occur. To fix the connections would cost 90 pounds and take longer than getting a new one, so i'm just going to bite the bullet and fork out for a replacement.

Damn Sony's 1 year warranty.

I know its difficult to nail it down but i've had the GRID demo crash my ps3 and thats the one and only game thats done that.

Perhaps is the game and some bad programming thats perhaps straining the components weak spots somehow and causing lunch?

I certainly wont be playing grid again just to be sure !!

4 years? The release of the PS3 was March 2007 so how do you figure that?

A two year old system failing due to manufacturing fault - you should be all over them to replace it FOC, since that's clearly not fit for purpose under the sale of goods act.

i'm on my second PS3, my first on lasted an amazing three months of VERY light use (less than 90hrs use i imagine!)

mine (as you can imagine, immaculate, not even dusty, no scratches etc) got replaced FOC for a new (scratched, unboxed more than likely refurb'd) PS3.....

i went to Comet to kick off, they wouldn't entertain the thought of replacing my original one, as it's 'Sony's Policy' to replace them.....

gutted to say the least.... (i think i even put a thread up on here about it....)

Correct it was only software in PAL units.

Should of pinned them to the wall a bit. I had a SNES fail on me many moons ago and Nintendo sent a next day courier to pick it up and provide the packing materials and drop off a new one with a letter of apology.
