What did they say to you?
When I check online it says 'Standard Warranty Expired: 1/4/08'
What I want to know is if this means the 12 month warranty, because if so it should still be covered for RRoD. That can't be expiration of the 3 year warranty because it'd have to start in April 05 and the 360 wasn't even out then.

Just fix it yourself. I did mine 18 months ago and it has been running sweet eversince, just got a fixing kit on ebay.
You need to pick up some extra bits too, maplins has everything you need (or of you look harder than me there is probably someone on ebay selling everything in 1). Takes about 20 minutes to do it.

I may get a PS3, as there are now exactly 2 titles that I might play on it. Except one of them isn't out yet, and the other one is coming out on 360 shortly. When I absolutely *have* to start buying films on Blu-ray maybe. A good mate works for SCEE, and I've been asking him every time I see him, "Any must have's yet? Time for me to get a PS3 then?" and thus far he's said "Nah, not really."

just as good results using a heat gun on my motherboard tbh.It will also take some people an hour and 20 minutes
just to open the xbox case, let alone remove the standard clamps, put paste on, fit the washers/screws and rebuild!

Here is a nice little guide on how to get Microsoft to repair your out of warranty/ second hand bought 360 (Bought Broken on eBay). Now, I always say that the X-Clamp fix isn't a permanent solution. My advice, is to bit the bullet and send in the xbox to get it fixed, the right way.
Here we go
1) Call up Xbox Support - 1-800-4-MY-XBOX or 1-800-469-9269
2) You will hear the annoying lady talk, and she gives you some "departments" to choose from. One would think that since you want to get your 360 repaired, you would choose the repair center, right? WRONG!! Pick Technical Support. The repair center wont re-register your 360 without the previous owner information.
3) Go through the options until you get to a live agent. When he answers, the key is what to say. This is what I always say;
"I recently purchased a Xbox 360 second hand and would like to register it in my name."
I suggest you do not mention it has red ring! He should say okay, he will get information from you, put you on hold, and then it should be done! BAM! It should now be registered to you!
4) Now that doesn't get it repaired, so the next step is to go to xbox website
(since there are no outside links I wont give you the address, but it is easy to figure out xbox; than something many sites have after the address...)
Choose xbox support -> Repair console (under console management on the support page) -> Register a new console -> fill in the same information you gave the agent.
When you select done, you should go to the repair page where you can select how you want to get the console to them, this part is self explanatory. You did it!
Just make sure you have a warranty sticker on it! Any kind will do! Doesn't matter if it is modded, or you tried the X-Clamp fix. They will fix it as long as there is a sticker!
(I have heard people say they sent them in with not warranty sticker and they got repaired, so if you don't have a sticker, it is worth a shot to send it in!)

Thanks for that. TBH, I paid £280 for 3 1/2 years of 360 use, and it was money well spent. Spending £80 for another 12 months is still good bang for buck by my count. And I imagine it's pretty unlikely that the new parts being used in new machines and repairs will have the same failure rate - M$ won't want to have to do another climb-down, the bad publicity and cost hurt them enough last time...

Spend £99 from Asda or similar, get 3 years RROD cover, then sell knackered machine on ebay £15, also sell separately, new controller £20, power unit £20, leads £5 thats £60 back, so will only cost you £39 for new console!Tol

Hahahahahaha, oh god, if only that was true. The entire reason this debacle is still ongoing is because they just patch the broken ones up and send them out again so they can fail with the same problem further down the line. There are people out there on their 6th or 7th replacement. Microsoft haven't been honest about the RRoD issue claiming something like only 5% of 360's have suffered from it when in reality it's supposed to be more like 33%.Tol
you might think £280 for 3 1/2 years of gaming is okay but really, it's not. you're just lucky it's only happened to you now, more unfortunate people have had nothing but constant trouble. What pisses me off is that someone else could have their 360 replaced infinitely in that 3 year period, yet someone else might have no issues for the first three years and then the moment they do they're no longer entitled to a free repair. It stinks. I'll be on my 3rd Xbox in a 3 year period, so I don't really think an average ifespan of 12-18 months is acceptable.
