I have just hard wired in my sons Xbox as he wants to go on live, first of all do i have to put my credit card details in as i have told him that i`m not keen on this, ie is that the only way? I have been told that you can buy cards for this, so looked into that some are gold cards and some have points on them (totally confused now). So do i need to still put my card details in if i purchase a card? If not which card is the one to go for? and where is the best place to purchase one.
sorry for the ignorance guys as yes you have guessed it, i`m not really into Xboxes, play stations, etc etc.

Well if he has not been onto xbox live gold before with that profile then you can just sign up and get a month for free without having to enter anything information except for name, DOB and an email adress IIRC. And to do this just click join xbox live on his profile once the console is connected to the internet, go through the process and when it offers you payment options, just click the option thats something like "no thanks, will pay later" and then it'll take you straight to the 1-month free page.
I use the membership cards rather than entering credit card info too, especially as using the credit card will automatically renew the subscription as soon as it ends... the two types of card are;
12 month membership: http://www.play.com/Games/Xbox360/4-/860394/Xbox-L...
3 month: http://www.play.com/Games/Xbox360/4-/860178/Xbox-L...
13 month: http://www.play.com/Games/Xbox360/4-/3452056/Xbox-...
just looked at play.com as its easy tho - the cards are available anywhere incl. high-street stores and eBay, so play is probably not the best price available.
Hope this helps, typed quite quickly so if ive not been clear just send me a PM

I used one of the 'Play Traders' for my Gold Membership, was the cheapest at the time and they email the code to you within a few hours.
Didn't do much shopping around tbh, but from what I did look at, the play trader was the cheapest.
Just pick one with high/good feedback
Same here - just last week I bought a 12 month membership from "instantlivecodes" on this list. The code was emailed to me that evening and I got myself signed up without a hitch. Getting the membership using a card (MS, not credit!) is preferable, as it's £10 cheaper than giving your credit card details to Xbox Live, and they won't be able to auto-renew your membership at the end of the year (which they do without asking if they have your card details...).Didn't do much shopping around tbh, but from what I did look at, the play trader was the cheapest.

If you put your CC details in they will only downgrade the service and not charge your card if you phone them and specifically tell them to put you to silver. Can't be done online.
I've read on PH before that if you renew the Xbox live gold via credit card but then cancell that card renewal it'll delete the gamertag. This would upset your son massively as he'll lose his score etc.
The 12 month scratch cards are the way to go after using the 1 month free gold subscription.

I highly doubt this would happen. Your gamertag is still valid without a gold subscription. Nonetheless I'm going to cancel my subscription today and get one of these cards, i've been a fool paying £5 a month, a fool I say! But if my gamertag disappears I'll eat my words. And also have a small cry.The 12 month scratch cards are the way to go after using the 1 month free gold subscription.
