Just bought an X Box :-)
Discussion
I've just braved the manically busy shops and roads and been out and bought myself an X box
Two questions :
1) Recommended games ?
2) I've already got 600k broadband which comes into my office upstairs and is shared between my 2 PC's via a Linksys 4 port router. Obviously I'd like to get online with the X box to play, but the cable modem and TV are in completely opposite ends of the house.
a) what's the maximum run you can get away with, with a network cable (without getting into repeaters etc)
b) is there anything that I could get RF wise which is basically just a sender/receiver to do away with the cable in between, which I can plug one end into the X box and the other end into the router (I dont want to have to buy an RF router unless I really have to)
Cheers

Not sure what distance were you thinking about?

You can set up a wireless lan and use that instaed of the cable between your xbox and the host PC.

You can run cat 5 externally, but it's reccomended you use external grade ie shielded cat 5.
Just try to keep the cable out of direct heat like sunlight and make sure its not going to be blown about by the wind etc.
Gareth
edited to add rainbow six 3 is cool both online and standalone.

Not entirely sure. As the crow flies (through walls), it's not going to be more than 10-12m. If I just draped it out of my office, down the stairs, and into the living room temporary like, then probably 30-40m. If I installed it permanently and ran it along the walls, under carpets, along skirtings etc then god knows ! (probably nearing the 100m ... not sure)
edited coz the chars in sliders name messes up quotes :-)

Could you not bring it through the floors?
I was actually thinking of up into the loft, across the body of the house through the loft, then dropping it down the outside of the house just outside of where the telly is (and through the same hole in the wall as the Sky cable)
Hmmm ... I wonder how easy these floorboards come up ....
(oh god my wife's gonna kill me !)The xbox colours arent exactly defined as a good PC card would be. I have found you can sharpen them just by changing the colour settings on the telly.
Loft sounds like a good idea and if you can use existing drops then thats even easier, just dont run the network cable along the length of any power cables.
Halo is crap and over priced, halo 2 is sposed to be good.

LOL !
I've actually bought the X box because I can never get near my PC because of her playing UT2003 online all the time ! So I can just imagine the future, both of us sat in different rooms, gaming away all night .... yes, we are sad
The only thing she said when I said I was getting an X box was "it had better not cause me any lag in UT2003 !!!"
(which leads on to another question, just how bandwidth thirsty is an X box ?)

I dont think its too bad to be honest. I have had 3 pc's running on the network and then my xbox online without any real problems as there are no custom things in a game which need to be sent so really its only postion and action commands sent then the xbox does the rest on the fly at each and. I have only noticed lag on one occasion but i was downloading 350 meg files over the internet. and remember xbox can be rigged to work on a dialup connection.
Dont show her Unreal championship which i have,,, much better than unreal2003.
