Left 4 dead - simpleton question

My daughter and I just bought this, and for £45 we expected a game comparable to Halo or Half life. Well, it seems to be another rush-around-and-shoot-everybody game, that you can't save, and when you leave you have to go back to the very start.
Tell me we have it set up wrong, that we CAN save games and we can select characters etc.
We don't play on-line, (my daughter is only 8) just split-screen.
I'm a little disappointed at parting with 45 squid if this is as good as it gets.

You don't save, you play through each "movie" in one go with 3 friends over the internet. There is no point saving anyway. The point is to treat it as 4 interactive zombie flicks rather than to see who can get the biggest frag countor kill/death ratio although that does come into it. The game comes into its own when you play it late at night with friends, with headsets on using the in-game voice chat and having a good laugh while you play. Each story only lasts an hour or two like a real film rather than spending an hour each day for a week playing through an epic story arc like the halflife series.
L4d really excels online with other players. I play it nearly every night with mates and use our ventrilo server to banter. This game has excellent replay value.
We all had a 8 player versus match (survivors v infected) the other night and that was excellent
It doesn't have a same game option as the whole point of not having it is to make you be more careful with your health and ammo when trying to get to the end of a campaign. I think it works really well.

It was recommended by the medic at work, who said her 15 year old reckoned it was the best game he has ever played. There seems to be very little on the box about what the game involves, but I assumed it was a standard first person shooter.Still, early days yet, so maybe we'll get the hang of it.
I do like the way it changes every time you play a segment, after we all got killed and started again.
It was a toss up between this game and Wolfenstein, of which the original was the very first computer game I ever played. Brilliant game. Maybe next week.....

Same, or not much more anyway. It's a VERY short game, with a sequel just around the corner. Where it really becomes fun though is it's multiplayer is very addictive. As a single player it's terrible. To get the most out of it get a few folks together and get online. It does wear thin eventually, especially story mode, but I still look forward to the sequel

That's a good idea. It was a new game, but didn't come in a sealed pack, as they told me they take the disc out when they put the box on the shelf, which I found a little odd.Should see a refund pretty sharpish.

I suspect a lot of them do it so they can pass nearly-new trade-ins off as new.
Left 4 dead is a fantastic game, but only if you play online.
It's whole existence in life is to be played with other people on the internet. It's kind of like playing World Of Warcraft on your own, totally pointless.
Take it back, claim it keeps freezing or something and get Wolfstein.
