Yup, a classic game. I played an open GL version for ages a couple of years back. I keep wanting this exact game, only updated graphics and sound to be released.

Elite 3 is in the making and has been for sometime. However I am not sure if they ran out of funds.

X3 is probably the closest your going to get to Elite these days, although EvE is like Elite online it dosnt have the same depth.

That was the best side of Star Wars Galaxies, the ability to customise your fighter with equipment and go off and shoot your mates. The land based stuff aged very fast but the space side of things was good fun.

In elite you had to hire a crew, purchase food for them and that kind of miro management. EvE dosnt have that side to it. Plus Elite was much more on piloting skill, you could take on a better equiped ship and still win if you were good with a joystick. EvE has pilot skill but its not as direct.

I loved elite2, first game I ever brought for my PC, taught me all about loadhigh, hihmem and all that stuff however because the combat was realistic it wasn't very good, the closing speeds between craft were always very high, I prefer a more dog-fight style game, like i-war. There was a sequel, here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/First_Encounters which i also remember being awesome.

Ahh yes i-war that was good game played the second one.

I also loved the conflict free-space games everything from the story to the music was spot on.

That's true, although I prefer Eve's flying style (because I'm lazy). I like the greater scope for things in Eve like building space stations and interacting with others.

Eve is excellent. Evs is NOT Elite or any of it's follow-ups.

oh yeah, free space was great. I remember it well.

Might have to d/l elite 3 (also on freeware according to wikipedia) and all the graphics updates and stuff. Of course I don't have a joystick anymore...

Frontier, one of my all time favourite games... Shame about the sequel, which was fun up until it crashed, which it did often.

Pretty much, JJ-FFE fixes most of the bugs though it does still crash usually in scripted missions and occassionally when doing BBS jobs i.e. military or assassination missions. On the most part it's a lot more stable than the latest retail patched version of FFE.
