xbox 360 or ps3
Discussion
defo a can of worms...
probably as recently as 6 months ago I'd have said Xbox, but the PS3 has been catching up fast, its always been better as a media centre, DVD/BlueRay Player, Internet Browser etc. Includes all the wireless gubbins you'll be paying extra for with Xbox and the controllers are rechargeable.
The games of late have been getting better and better, some platform exclusive, others not, but the catalogue is definitely increasing.
The visuals are better with the PS3, but not by a huge margin than the xbox.
Best solution, get both!
I have, to be honest the Xbox doesnt get used that much, If its a multi-platform release I tend to get it on the PS3 rather than the Xbox, I'm only really keeping the xbox for halo games and Mass Effect2 when it comes out!

PS3
Good reasoning
Xbox is cheaper, generally regarded as having better online multiplayer experience (although you pay £30 a year), better deals to be had.
PS3 has Blu-Ray, ability to browser internet and do more generally online.
Which console do your friends have? Do you want to play online with them? This is what it really comes down to. They're gonna provide the same gaming enjoyment unless you're a blinkered fanboy

FM3 is good if you just like painting cars, you could always get photoshop instead?
GT5 is good if you like racing games.

Currently the PS3 has no decent games that aren't also on the X-Box, the X-box also has a load of excellent exclusive games, better online capability and (IMO) a nicer controller.....
.....and it's cheaper.
PS3 has no good exclusive games... apart from Uncharted 1 & 2? Demons Souls? GT5? God Of War 3? MAG? Playstation Network is just as good as XBL and its free! .....and it's cheaper.
....and the xbox costs more (with batterys for controllers, wireless adaptors, stand alone Blu Ray)

Games? Meh, none of them have impressed me enough to buy a PS3 (which I will do when there are decent exclusive games).
Blue Ray? Pointless argument. We're talking games consoles not films that look a teeny bit better.
You don't need a wireless adaptor and you can get a charge and play adaptor instead of batteries.

Playstation network has much lower amounts of players, more annoying players (as they don't have to pay to play), much harder to organise a party with friends... Definitely worse.

Though I do have a PS3, but freely admit online play is easier (more user friendly) on the XBox
I've got both. If I had to have only one it would be PS3.
Make up your own mind, if you HAVE to have Gears of War or Forza then it's Xbox. If you want Umcharted or GT5 then it's PS3 all the way.
Blu ray is a massive advantage of the PS3 so long as your telly is up to it, and instant acess iplayer is a nice touch.
Xbox has the edge for online play, but then it does cost £40 a year for the privalage.
Horses for courses. They basically cost the same (unless you need the extortionate wi-fi adaptor for Xbox). For xbox you'll also need a rehargeable battery kit for the controller and £40 live gold membership to get online. It won't ever do HD films unless you rent them from live. For me, PS3 gets you more value out of the box.
