PSP - Any good?

I am thinking of getting a psp. Are they worth the money? Will probably get driving and fighting games...

I'd certainly think the PSP is in the gadget department. Internet, movies, music, games, etc. Mods, they are silly breed.

Warning - a PSP is *not a computer game* as this thread placement may suggest.

I tried all manner of ways of putting it into my xbox but just couldnt get it to play

I've had one since they were launched and use it fairly regularly. The games are ok, think Playstation 1.5 level - not quite as good as PS2 in terms of graphics, although Gran Tourismo is getting there.

I use mine mainly for watching movies and tv shows on flights or long train journeys with the option of some gaming if I get bored. I wouldnt travel without it. So, if you do a lot of travelling it is worth getting, especially the new Go which is much more compact and has a good sized memory built in.

If you're buying it just for the gaming, its not worth it...

If you want racing games on a handheld, nothing else comes close. i tried a few racing games on the iPod Touch, but they just had seriously lousy controls.

Gran Turismo on PSP=mobile racing I may as well weld the UMD tray shut on mine. Its probably more entertaining than GT5P.

I used to use it for gaming and video in equal amounts - and for me at least the screen is much better for video than the iPod Touch, purely on the screen size. Now its primarily a GT5 device.

One thing to note though - the PSP Go is 100% not worth getting at all. If you're intending to buy it for personal use (ie. not as a present), then just head on down to Game and pick up a second hand one for 70 or 80 quid. You can get pre-owned games for less than a tenner from various high street game stores, and some good 'uns out there.

GTA - Vice City has been in my PSP for a year - all completed, i just love driving around, drifting a 'Corvette' and shooting people.

Awesome.

Have Gran Turismo sitting there but its an xmas pressie off mum so am not allowed to open it! Unfair!

I bought a white one from Japan when they first came out there, was really busy at work at the time and never really got to use it so sold it to a mate, regret it massivly and think about getting a new one all the time.

it's like a PMP that plays decent games. I would the the PSP 2000 though rather than the go, I had a go on one the other day and it didn't seem that well built!

Most of the PSPs success is due to its ability to be "adapted", say no more.......
This makes it 20 times more useful than just buying UMDs to stick in it.

Head over to psp.ign.com and look at the reviews. Apparently F1 2009 plays quite well, with reasonable handling.

Apparently Dirt2 on the PSP is absolutely dire.

The Go is an attempt at extending the life of the console and reducing costs, and maybe trialling digital-only distribution.

Apparently the next PSP may well be going back to UMD or similar storage. And there's a rumour that one company is going to attempt to put together a UMD addon for the Go.

Got one when they were first released, played it for a couple of weeks and then it sat in the cupboard ever since. I bought a Nintendo DS afterwards and that has seen much more use, at least until my GF nicked it off me.

The gripes I have with it - the games take too long to load, the unit isn't pocket-sized, and for someone who is obsessive about keeping things looking, nice it attracts dirt and scratches. I also found the games were not the kind you can pick-up and play quickly, but this was mainly a problem due to the 30 minute window I had to use it (on the morning commute).

I quite fancy a PSP Go though as it seems to address these issues, but I'll only buy one after it has been hacked.
