Warren spectre init.. or whatever his name was
he did System Shock as well IIRC
i have a theory...
sounds a bit odd but I think that the simple graphics, the lack of detail, simple textures and models etc.. actually CONTRIBUTES to the sense of involvement and 'being in the world'
its a bit like a book vs. a film... because less is done for you, your mind creates a little bit more, your imagination is forced to be more contributory. Maybe because of this, everything becomes more immersive and believeable. Modern games give it to you all on a plate however. Even if you don't buy this, one thing is for sure ... the simple graphics in no way detract from the gameplay. The AI is pretty weak and some of the fighting is plain stupid but the gameplay and overall experience is just as credible today as it was back then.

I think it's definatley aged well.
Warren Spector isn't involved in the new one, but from what I've seen so far it looks like it's a worthy sequel. They've moved to a cover/regenerating health system but I don't think that'll detract really as scrounging around for health packs on the larger levels could by annoying, especially when you get 3/4 of the way through the game with only 1 save slot used, and realise that something you did earlier scuppers your chances of progressing...
They've also given enemy squads a leader character who when he's taken out makes the enemy break into disarray which sounds pretty cool.

I think it's down to design. Oblivion was a somewhat immersive game which had both good design and graphics.dwilkie said:
The sequel was a let down. It had some good bits, but they took all the depth out of it to make it more console oriented.
Hopefully the forthcoming Deus Ex 3 while stick with their announced plan to align the experience with the first game.
I didn't think it was too bad, it had atmosphere in places.. the smaller areas wound me up a bit, i missed exploring all the little nooks-and-crannies like you did in the original, and the streamlined inventory/ammo system was a bad idea i thought too.. Hopefully the forthcoming Deus Ex 3 while stick with their announced plan to align the experience with the first game.
