Having being bored of my current selection of games, i thought i would have a search round on the webs to find a cheap classic to rekindle my love for PC gaming and i came across "Steam" for people who have never heard of this, "steam" is basically a game shop, where you can download top retail games straight from this program onto your PC
and there currently doing a one day sale on some golden oldies that i remember from my youth (god i sound old)
20mins later and im now downloading: the secrets of monkey island and evil genius for the grand total of about £3!!! now thats what i call bargain gaming
Anybody else use this program? and suggestions on what other gems are out there

Yeah steam has been about for years now but it seems to be picking up momentum the last few years since publishers have started offering download options.
I love it - i have already collected a fair few games and those occasional deals they put on are lethal! The great thing about it also is if its an old title it should be tested so it should work straight away with no hassle

Day of Defeat Source is fantastic if you like online FPS and only £4.99 now
Lots of spade thwacking fun then.I rate Steam pretty highly, first came across it when I got HL2. I love the convenience of not having to keep hold of CD's, and just downloading any game I've paid for as many times as I want (unlike the EA store, where you have to pay to redownload.)
Valve can be arses, and the price of steam games is rarely as cheap as on the high street - but its worth it.
I used to loathe it when they first introduced it for CS, but the bugs seem to be ironed out now (for the most part)
My main problem with it is that its more expensive than buying the game from a shop.. although I have bought games this way it always feels like a bit of a rip-off if im buying a new game.
For old games its great value.

I know im digging up an old thread, but I thought it would be easier to post here and get a simple yes or no answer then to create a whole new thread for it:
Im currently getting ready to upgrade to another computer, if I download steam again, am I able to re-download the games I've paid for or do I have to transfer the files over via an external hardrive?

You can do either.Im currently getting ready to upgrade to another computer, if I download steam again, am I able to re-download the games I've paid for or do I have to transfer the files over via an external hardrive?
Redownload everything, or backup the steam folder and then copy it over to your new PC.
Its probably a good idea to backup the folder to save a lengthy download.
I'd concur, just copy your Steam directory over to the new PC. Install Steam on the new PC, when it asks where you're installing to point it to where your old Steam directory is, click Install, enter your login details, and off you go.
I would have a lot of respect for Steam, if it didn't insist on downloading the Orange Box when I had the game CD in the b
d computer so I didn't have to get it from the states, Valve you lame twunts!
