RIP my Elite (stupid Microsoft)

It's happened! Playing COD 6 last night, Xbox starts freezing up. I turn it off then back on and am faced with the RROD! Arrrrggghhh! At bloody christmas too!
I tried to run it a few more times after that and it would start COD6 but as soon as I was in a game it would freeze. I went to turn it on this morning and was instantly faced with the RROD!
So, I guess my options are to send it off for warranty work (it's only just two years old, and a bloody elite, and it's bloody Christmas so I should have more time to play on it) or I take all of my games in to GAME and trade them in for a shiny new PS3.
If I do go down the warranty route, is it worth giving Microsoft a call and playing up a bit to see if I can get some christmas freebies? Also, what have people's experiences of the RROD warranty been like?
What should I do guys?

Firstly your console is covered for 3 years from date of purchase for the RROD repair, so no worries there. Secondly the turnaround time for repairs is pretty quick, you need to register it on the Xbox website and a DHL shipping form will be automatically generated, all you need to do then is find a suitable box and package it up - then contact your local DHL depot to arrange collection.
Mine was picked up, shipped to frankfurt for repair, and returned 8 days later - however over Xmas this might well take longer. Short answer is that the repair process is pretty quick and efficient, but with the failure rate of Xboxs it damn well has to be !
Wether you give it up and trade all your games in for a PS3 is entirely your call, oh and by the way the GT5 demo is reportedly out tomorrow so I guess thats one reason to be tempted to the dark side

I did think it was ironic that BBC's Watchdog ran a section on how unreliable the PS3 was and that Sony weren't taking it seriously. Odd that, I wonder who helps BBC with some content management and back-end systems? Seems odd that they didn't do the 360....

did you bother to register your console online with ms support? if so go to your homepage and click on your serial number then click on three red light repair
they email you a ups label then you ring ups , they come out and get the console and return it to you within 10 days
mine has been "fixed" three times now
all FOC , with zero hassle or fuss

EXACTLY the same thing has just happened to mine last nite, was a halo edition console and has been faultless up until yesterday, screen kept freezing came out, went back in and would do the same again.
got my ups label sent to me this morning, going to package it up and send it today / tommorrow.
pain in the ass. only worry i have is if they do fix my console, im gona lose the halo one and end up with a plain one

However mine only has one red light and i get the E74, i have changed all cables with spare ones but nothing, it is 2 years old and now i am in bummer of a mood,
What do i do now then as i wont get it back for Christmas, Oh and im getting a game and turtle headphones and wireless adapter for Christmas,

I know the XBox repair service is good as my friend's 360 died a few months. He had his repaired and returned within a week and a half so good stuff really.
What I find most annoying is the timing of this RROD (which is never a good thing, I suppose). I finally had some time booked off over Christmas to get some serious gaming in and the bugger goes and dies on me. And as it is Christmas I doubt I will see my console for about three weeks (which is a sod as I only renewed my Live subscription last month).
To be honest, I have been looking at a PS3 for about 6 months now, and with the introduction of the slim version, I'm even more tempted. The blue-ray would be brilliant in my living room with my HD tv.
What I think I will do is this. I'll take all of my games into GAME and see what trade-in dosh they will give me for them off a PS3. I have loads of XBox games but only really ever play MW2 and Forza3 (so i'll trade MW2 in, get it on PS3 and just keep Forza3). I'll then get my Xbox sent off for repair and await its return. I'll also ask Santa for some cash towards a PS3 as I don't really want or need anything else.
If I do the above i'll finally get my PS3, i'll have something to play over Christmas, i'll finally clear up the stack of old games that is collecting dust on the side and i'll retain my shiny collectors edition Forza3. To be honest, Forza3 is the only thing that I would play on Xbox now.
So, i'm off to GAME tonight armed with a stack of games. God knows what i'll get for them but at least it will be something off the PS3. I think MW2 will fetch a half decent price, I hope.

I can't bear to be without a console at christmas lol so PS3 is the way. I'm only going to get MW2 on it to start with (unless I get another game bundled with it) so will check it out with that.
Compared to Xbox Live, yes. PSN really is terrible.
Anyone who says "Oh LOLZ. U HAZ 2 PAYZ 2 GO ONLINEZ?" is just trying to dodge the fact the Xbox is superior when it comes to the online service. Besides, you can get an Xbox Live gold subscription for less than £30 if you search deep enough!

Guess i'm lucky to have 'access' to 3 xbox 360s, my one at home, the one at the G/F's and the one sat in its box waiting for someone to buy it.
From my experience of MS warranty (only had to use it once) its very quick and reliable. Not worth giving up on the 360 just because of RROD, at least it is covered under warranty whereas the YROD doesn't appear to be

.....i'd gladly chose XBL over PSN anyday.
XBL is sooo much slicker and more reliable,user friendly and more instinctive the way everything flows together from the menus in the places you'd expect them to be
spend a week with PSN after you have been used to XBL and come back to us with your findings

I couldn't agree more blade. I had a PS3 for about a month until i bought an elite, and before that, i must admit i was one of those "lol, you have to pay for xbox live" guys. After putting my Xbox online however, i then realised just how much better it was. Games like GTA IV (which i had on both consoles) and COD were so much smoother when playing with people. Sure, you still get lag on Xbox Live, but that only usually happens if your playing someone who is somewhere like Australia with a real bad connection or if the host has a bad connection. Happens very rarely though, i must admit.
The Marketplace is where Xbox Live really shines though in my opinion. The ammount of content on there is amazing, and now with the new Zune Movie Marketplace, there is no more downloading necessary when renting out a Movie. Awesome!

The comments above are interesting as people who have had both consoles can give an opinion on the different networks. A work colleague of mine owns both consoles but he reckons PSN is better than live! He had his XBox for a while before his PS3 too.
Oh well, I guess the PS3 will be useful for the blue rays and media bits and the XBox will be the gaming rig.
It's just bad timing at the moment as I actually have some serious time to play games over Christmas! Oh well, at least Christmas will help me get my PS3!
Go and buy a new one, then sell the one you get back when M$ return it. If it costs you £30 once you've sold/traded the new st you get with the new bundle you buy, I'll be surprised. I got the £189 Elite / Fifa 10 / Pure / Lego batman deal from Tescos.
