I seem to have no problem doing the campaign on veteren, and wasn't too bad online using the last modern warfare, yet I'm bloody awful playing MW2 on Xbox live. I usually get twice as many deaths as kills, and rarely get a streak about 3. Is it just impossible to be good without spending 8 hours a day on it, or camping behind a box on each match?

I'm no Norbury, but a few things to remember:

Just fired your weapon? All the enemy team know where you are.

Stood still for a while? Someone's about to stab you in the back.

Aiming at someone? Someone else is aiming at you.

Killed someone? He knows where you are and he's coming for revenge.

Reloading? Hit the deck, or move to cover.

Keep playing, in a shor time it'll just "click" and you'll wonder what all the fuss was about.
Learn the weapons and the maps.

I'm not so sure, just checked on the barracks thing and I've played nearly 12 hours online! Think I'm probably just best of sticking this game away in a drawer and playing something else, I usually find it irritating rather than enjoyable. In response to the earlier question, getting killed in pretty much every situation, trying to shoot someone, moving around the map etc. I don't particularly hang around either but still get shot/stabbed in the back very often

I look at it like this:

I'm thinking 'ohh this is a good place to shoot from' so somebody else is definetly thinking 'I bet somebody is there waiting to kill me'.

You need to be that second person thinking one step ahead of you're opponents. Anticipation of enemy movement is the key.

Try playing games were this a set location/objective that people will be moving towards this way you can learn how people move.

Also on HQ if you die once you have captured the HQ you have to spectate, so cycle through and spectate the best player and see what they are doing.

Sneak about, don't just run into rooms expecting not to get shot.

Try to second-guess what your enemies are likely to do, where they are likely to go etc.

The better idea you have of where the enemy team is, the better position you are in. Thats why I use a heartbeat sensor, I can know where the enemy is without wandering about until one spots me first.

Flank the enemies, then pick them off one at a time.

Of course, you can also run about with Tactical Knife like a crazy man, but that ends in disaster unless you are very good.

Silencer/Cold-blooded is a nice combination.

Oh and yes, Callan and Raify speak very wisely.

Callan and Raify are spot on. You just have to learn. learn your weapons that you like which weapons you use best on each map. and learn the maps. Don't do the same moving everytime you die, mix it up and try to keep moving but not irratically. Practice make perfect and you don't have to play for 8 hours a day. I get an hour or 2 every few days and more on weekends and I hold my own.

Some good suggestions chaps, will give some of the above a go. I have been using the heartbeat sensor a bit lately and that does seem to have made things a little better I'll admit

Forgot to mention, but i see it was mentioned above. Cold-Blooded is an awesome perk. Stops you getting shot by the killstreak rewards and UAVs can't see you.

If now the map, and can read the radar (when someone gets it, as no noob would play non hc) you will be ahead of most.

Knowing the map is pretty much most of the battle.

Another thing you might want to try is playing at different times of the day/week. It definately easier some times than others.

By killstreak rewards do you mean pavlows and the like? If I'll deffinately start using that perk, I do think they went a little too far with the amount of choppers/harriers and whatever that can be called it in MW2

Yep, also sentry guns. As soon as i got this perk it felt like i wasn't getting killed every twenty seconds.

Sadly it costs you stopping power.... Which then makes it harder to kill.

However, to my mind if you play it for a few hours you will learn where people sit on maps, where people can shoot at you from on maps too (use the Deathcam to see them). You can then hunt them down/use similar tactics to get kills. Also follow a teammate about (not too closely) who is good, and see what they do.

If your ping is s**t or you have lag, forget it. You won't win. The other guy will see, shoot and kill you before you even see them.

I will add that I don't think the weapons make much difference (except for the really st ones) so don't get hung up on that.

I have been working towards getting the extended mags for all of my weapons and changing weapons doesn't really affect my performance now, SMG AR and LMG they are all about the same, obviously they have certain differences but once you learn the game they're all much of a muchness (especially in Hardcore where nearly every kill is from one shot)

If you're playing FFA, move to Team Deathmatch or Domination. Helps enormously to get to know the weapons and maps when you're not twitching at the slightest movement.
