New Super Mario Wii - brilliant or frustrating?
Discussion
Or perhaps brilliantly frustrating?
Has anyone out there got the new super mario on Wii. I have always liked the old games, eve though i found them rather annoying with the (now retro) lack or easy save features.
And i am finding my feelings the same or if not worse with the new one. Cannot deny that it is a great game, and strangely addictive, but it is also hugely, utterly, ball bruisingly frustrating. First of all, the difficulty curve is very steep (well for me anyway). Then you toil for hours and manage to get quite far in a particular world and you even manage to get some ridiculously hard big coins, then you go and lose all your lives while trying to defeat a boss and you loose all the fruits of your labour for the past 2 hours because you are not able to do a proper save! All they offer mid world is a quick save thingy which takes you out of the game and allows you to start where you left off for one time only! Proper saves can only be done after defeating either of the two bosses in each world. aaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrggggggggggggghhhhhhhhh! It is so annoying. I appreciate they are trying to keep the spirit of the originals, but i just wonder if they have shot themselves if the foot by trying to be too 'retro' to the point of damaging the players mental health. I certianly did not feel this level of frustration with Mario Galaxy or Paper Mario, and i fear that because of the lack of ability to do a full save mid game, i will soon give up on New Super Mario for good and never see anything past world 2! Which is a shame!

If you think it is frustrating now, try playing on multiplayer. No two players can occupy the same space, so you are continually being jumped upon and pushed on cliffs. The upside to this is that if you have some competent players working together then you can work as a team to get through the level.
Can be a great party game if not taken too seriously but there are other games out there that I would enjoy more on my own.
Other annoying and slightly embarassing thing is that I swing the controller to help me get over gaps, apart from making me look like a retard this also makes the character do a spin jump which is damaging but doesn't go far, so I die.
Have fun but don't play with the other half, it'll cause arguments or you will throttle her with frustration.

Its really easy I have every coin, including the ones on the extra world which is where it started getting slightly more awkward.
Its great fun with a few people. Infact youd find it easier with a couple as you could keep each other alive during a level, unless your girlfriend likes eating you with yoshis anyway...
