Nope, you should be fine to not play the first. Might be worth reading the Wiki page to know the back story though.

I played the first 2 hours of ME, but didnt really get on with the rubbish shooting. ME2 is MUCH improved! One of my top games and I'm only 4 hours in.

I loved the first once i got used to the shooting, it's a very involving game and story but as above it's not essential and a good read of the wiki page should inform you enough. Ive not played the second, about 5 hours away for me wahoo.

I would defo play the first though sometime be a shame to miss out on the experience.

Ditto, I was a little miffed with the first one because of just this, may have to check ME2 if it's improved then!

You can also load in your character from your old save game and use them in ME2.

It's worth playing the first I think as the second refers to the first quite often so you might feel a bit lost otherwise.

2nd one is awesome by the way, possibly the best game I've played for years biggrin

Its not essential - but I've imported my save game, and the number of references to the old game is huge. I'd say you were missing out on quite a lot if you don't play the first, both in terms of your enjoyment of ME2 *and* the fact that ME1 is a cracking game in its own right.

The continuity in this game really is superb though...I've bumped into a number of minor characters from ME1 and had a lot of conversations regarding the choices I made in ME1 already. Really is brilliantly done.

I still say the inventory, itemisation and levelling/skills is far superior in ME1 though. I don't feel like my character is "progressing" at all....

What a result - I thought I'd deleted my old ME1 character but it must have been kept somewhere as I was able to continue on with him...including his several hundred thousand credit account! Woot!

PS: ME2...awesome so far!

You will enjoy Mass Effect, Im playing through it to get a really good save game for 2 and it is still such a good game.It has its problems (shooting, the Mako etc etc) but it is brilliant and has some funny bits and some bits you just dont see coming. Also getting it on lesbian fashion, quad testicled space monsters and yeah lots of good stuff.

Havent got two yet as im getting it today, but cant play it until I finish my save game.

Like as others have said, you can play ME2 without playing the first.
But the first is referenced so often, in little ways that would go over your head if you had not played the first.

I loved the first one even with all of its flaws (which to me didn't seem to bad) but one thing I do miss is the inventory, it has gone completely in ME2, along with the Mako frown

Got my copy friday afternoon, and now have almost all of the party members (cannot find the Geth guy called Legion) with most of them loyal now!

Won't put any spoilers, but if you have played the first there are quite a few "wow didn't see that one coming" moments biggrin

Its a seriously awesome game, there's not many games that hook me in - such a brilliantly realised world, with some fantastic characters.

Absolutly loving ME2, played nearly 8 hours this weekend. Combat is so much better and the story is great. Not to keen on the planet scanning though.

Query....

Im an adept and he can use the powers and a pistol (hold left trigger/shoulder thing and he aims), but is completly crap with the AR as he is 'untrained' (no aiming available) how does one train in the AR so I can bloody well use it instead of just powers???

Im as far as the mako bit, but now fed up of killing with powers alone and need more fire power...

Ta for help...

Its a bit like KOTOR which I still havent finished yet and must get back on...

It is great, I bought it on Saturday and managed to get to level 9 I think. I agree with the planet scanning, it's so tedious slowly scanning over the planet to find minerals, bring back the Mako!

Yes, that is very annoying, luckily my mouse has buttons that allow DPI switching so I crank it up to max for that and can whiz across the planet nice and fast!

Great game, I never played ME1, which is a small shame, I'd have liked to have played it when it was first released, but no way was I going to buy it once ME2 was already out. And at least I don't know that I'm missing some references here and there!
