Joy of joy the dreaded E74 code has just appeared on my T.V. screen. Which is an annoyance in itself but a more alarming thing is I've heard that if you replace the xbox with a new one and use your old hard drive then you can't continue your online rankings, Is this the case. I know some of you have experienced this before and was wondering if this is true or not. If this is the case Microsoft can sod off and I'll spend my money on a shiny new PS3.

I think your rankings are kept with your live I'd, so no worries about losing them with hardware problems.

Yes all your rankings are held with you gamertag.

When you get a new xbox, transfer the HDD to the new one, and recover gamertag.

You'll be fine with your old hard drive on a new nachine - I'm on my 4th 360, and because I had an extended warranty, always got new machines from Comet rather than send them away to MS, but I always kept the original hard drive. Never had any trouble or lost gamerscores etc.

Also, if you send it away to MS (E74 should be a free repair under warranty - isn't always though) you don't get the same one back, just some reburbished one which may or may not have current chipsets or HDMI out.

some saves are linked to the xbox number - if you have it replaced certain things may not work (forza 1 springs to mind) But generally everything should keep fine. anything online is stored online so is not an issue, like ranks and lap times. I beleive on 360 games you should still be able to use your saves, but this may not be the case for original xbox games being used on a 360. However original xbox live will be 'switched off' and only 360 games will be playable online, and with this will come some improvements like more frinds and other features that the orginal xbox compatibility held back.

E74 errors are covered under the extended warranty (3 years)
