How to backup a PS3
Discussion
There is an option under Settings>Backup Utility that will create a full back up of your HDD to your USB drive. You need to make sure the USB drive is in a format that the PS3 is happy talking to first though - it should be FAT32.
I did this before upgrading my PS3. You backup to a usb drive, slide out the old HDD and slide in a bigger one which it then formats and finds your backup, and restores from.
If it's individual game saves you're wanting to save, then as mentioned above just copy them one by one onto the USB Hdd once you get that working and recognised.
