You might not be able to play anything today:

http://www.mcvuk.com/news/37764/PS3-tech-woes-esca...

Sony better sort this out quickly as it appears that any recent game simply won't load.

I booted up my PS3 last night to play MAG online and it had "forgotten" my login password (even though it had remembered it before). I inputted the password and it logged on okay.

I was still crap at MAG though.

Problem will come today, theory is that the firmware in the older model (non-slim) PS3s will think that it's February the 29th today and won't authenticate correctly with the servers.

Mine doesn't even work with the date set manually... frown

Bloody pain in the arse that even with the internet connection disabled you can't play any games that have trophies even offline. Major design fault IMO. Can't play MW2, Assassins Creed 2 or Fifa 10.

All I want to do is play Heavy Rain, but they're conspiring against me, first my blu-ray laser kicks the bucket, now even when I've fixed that I'll have to wait for them to iron out this bug. I don't know how they're going to fix the problem for those people that can't even connect to the network or for those whose PS3s are set into a reboot cycle.

Couldn't you alter the system time? Temporary fix I know but it may work.

Or will the system simply not load up?

Changing the time or disabling internet connections made no difference to mind.

Has the millennium bug finally got here? biggrin

Mine worked OK at about 12.30am this morning however I am not holding much hope for when I get home unfortunately,

So annoying, I have been looking forward to moving things forward with Heavy Rain as all day.

Won't work even manually setting the time.

Offline games won't work if they have trophies which is a fundamental flaw IMO as sometimes the internet is down and you still want to play.

So is it best to keep it switched off until the fix is in place (if there is one)?

It'll probably clear itself up tomorrow as the internal clock flicks from 29/2/2010 to 1/3/2010. Yes it will be a day behind, but it will be a valid date correctable in software, it should also allow a firmware update to be pushed out by SCE to fix the prob once and for all.

What I guess is happening is that the hardware real-time clock is passing a date to the hypervisor, which is converting it into GMT. There may be a bug in this conversion code. This is then sending it to the operating system clock, which knows fine well that the 29/2/2010 is an invalid date, so it panics and resets itself to 31/12/1999. This date is what is being sent to the PSN leading to an authentication failure (the dates don't tally) and quite possibly what some games are using for trophy info (ie if you've unlocked trophies on 28/2/2010 but the game starts up on 31/12/1999, something is wrong somewhere and it might think it's trying to be hacked, so gives the authentication error that people are seeing).

Of course, this could be wildly wide of the mark, it could be down to those Otters!!

Sorry if this is a silly question, but is this only affecting the older PS3's and not the newer slim ones?

Thanks.
