Its my birthday soon and, as my life is idyllic, the only thing I can think of that I would want would be a 'gaming mouse' as I do tend to waste a lot of my life on online games.
Ive never bought such a thing though so wouldnt know what to look for can anyone give me a starter? I am after one specifically to make use of extra buttons/switches and I play mostly FPS like MW2 etc.
Or is a mouse a mouse?

I use a logitech G5. Had it two years now, so whatever the current one is should be good.
You can change the weight and sensitivity and the extra buttons help with the mapping of keys.
Get a wired one though. Apparently you can get lag problems with the wireless (may not be true anymore) and they eat batteries.

Logitech G3 as it has a button on each side; lots of them have the two extra buttons both on the left and this is harder to use than each side.
10 years of online gaming experience there in one sentence. MS Explorer mouse is also top notch and old and cheap and has the buttons as above.

Logitech G9. (or G9x Now)
At first was very unsure due to the shape of it. It doesnt look normal, but within a very short time ive found it irresplaceable. The shape is perfect and is very well built.
I love it so much ive bought another one as a spare for when this one breaks, but touch wood 2+ years and still going strong.
It has a sliding draw so you can add weights to make the mouse the perfect weight for you. Also has a very strong braided cable, Fully ajustable DPI on top of the mouse! Perfect for ingame for when using very different weapons. (For example, BF2:BC2 - lower dpi for normal running around then flick the dpi up for when in a tank, heli etc and find it much easier to use.
Also the mouse wheel is ajustable between normal free run, and notched. Which i find very handy when browsing the web and also weapon switching in game.
It also comes with 2 thumb buttons. Perfect for binding to your knife key in game
Regards

Having used a Microsoft IntelliMouse 3 (I think, std looking mouse with 5 buttons) for years, I finally got a Gaming Mouse at Christmas (Razer Imperator). The Much higher sensitivity took a bit of getting used to but you can change it on-the-fly to one of five user presets, depending on what you are doing. It's really comfortable and feels like a high quality product. Can't say how much it's improved my gaming because I haven't had too much chance to play FPSers since Christmas
However I have been playing through Crysis and that did seem better, and I also felt I was getting better/ more comfortable with the Razer in CS:Source.
One thing I did like about Razer is they have an 'expert system' type tool on their website which asks you about the games you play, and how you like to hold the mouse etc. to help you choose one suitable mouse.

MS Explorer as others discussed above. I used a few gaming mice, didn't really 'feel' right, I just wanted one with a few extra buttons for CS/TFC etc.
Now grown up a little (OH's words, not mine) and moved house and don't play as much anymore. Got my PC attached to TV in living room which makes CS fun in 42" glory... but now using a £5 wireless mouse and keyboard from Tesco. Nothing wrong with it, except a little lag at times, but could be down to the coffee table surface compared to my old Icemat days
