An idle office chat about retro games inspired me to download and start playing this again. IMHO it really is one of those games that has stood the test of time, it still plays brilliantly and once you have turned the resolution up it doesn't even look that bad.

I remember playing vs 2 friends over LAN many years ago, 5000 unit limits and a few CPU players on the biggest maps, PCs groaning under the strain but such a fantastic way to spend most of a day! Funny to think it'll probably run on a netbook these days.

Anyone else have fond memories (or even still play it)? I wonder if there are still any multiplayer servers...

It would be against the rules for me to post a link to it, but it is "Total Annihilation + Core Contingency + Battle Tactics + 3.1" all in one handy 680mb package which doesn't need installing and will run off a memory stick, CD or even in linux (via WINE)

Worth checking out http://springrts.com/ if you like TA. It's an open source implementation, and wasn't bad last time I played it.

No way! Supreme Commander is awesome biggrin

The scale of the battles are epic and the zoom interface is a touch of genius which I really miss in other games.

I find the two kind of merge into one in my memories, I keep thinking Total Annihilation had certain features but then realise it is SC I'm thinking of.

Once I have my main PC up and running again I'm going to reinstall SC, but TA runs great on my laptop so is perfect for filling a few idle moments in the mean time.

Anyone remember c-napping?

I still play this too, easily one of my all-time favourites. Still have my original discs.

One of my preferred game types is to have 4 player Skirmish with 3 allied AI opponents against me cool

Forgive my ignorance, but as a kid I ignored TA as I adored my C&C and always saw it as a poorer version of the same genre.

Will take a look at it now though, see what I missed.

TA was IMO better.... it took red alert to another level. im a C&C fanboy but still adored TA.

I was a big C&C fan, but TA was really really good!

SC is primarily based around huge maps, hundreds of units and epic battles. It's incredibly geeky and you really have to learn to play it, but its rewards are worth it I think. Great multiplayer if you're willing to put the time in.

I've not played SC2 but my common SupCom-foe has and says it's much more snappy. The huge scale maps are gone and I think it's more geared to the console market, i.e. short bursts of arcade fun.

Hundreds of units? I like this idea!! I ama C&CRA:2 fan, love the YR add on and also liked C&CGenerals. I got C&C:RA3, and found it was ok, but it didn't grab me like C&C:RA2:YR.

Don't like the feel of the Tiberium wars thing at all.

I think the unit count in SupCom goes up to one thousand per player eek

And the maps go from 5x5km 80x80km which are absolutely enormous. It takes a good ten minutes just to fly something across them biggrin

I loved Red Alert 2 biggrin
