PS3 System Update?

Did anyone else have to do this last night? Took 3 hours to download!!

Yeah, took mine about 30 minutes in the late afternoon. It was so you can't install Linux on the PS3 anymore....

You can't install Linux on a Slim anyway and the update is still there to install, so not just for that.

you can get around the update but cant use the psn, also the slim doesnt have use of OS

Maybe a fix for the time and date issues, what happened at end of feb!

What I meant was that the update must be doing more than simply disabling the option to boot another OS, otherwise they wouldnt release it for slim machines.

Likewise, the date issue didnt affect slim, so probably not just that.

1. Download and install PS3.ProxyServer.GUI here: http://www.mediafire.com/?ywnmy1wykzi
2. You may also have to download the .net Framework 1.1, found here: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang...
3. It doesn't create shortcuts so navigate to C:\Program Files\CF3B5\PS3.ProxyServer and run PS3.ProxyServer.GUI.exe
4. Type your current LOCAL IP ADDRESS (probably 192.168.*.*), you can leave the port as 8080, check PS3 Mode
5. Whatever port you use must be open on your router, so if 8080 is blocked, open it now
6. Go to the Replace Files tab and click Add
7. In the left box, paste this address: http://fus01.ps3.update.playstation....updatelist....
8. In the right box, click browse and find your LOCAL COPY of the 3.15 ps3-updatelist.txt file, download from here: http://www.mediafire.com/?dyjldy24yod
9. Back to the Proxy Settings tab, click Start
10. From your PS3's XMB, go to Settings, Network Settings, then Internet Connection Settings
11. Keep everything the way you have it configured now except for the Proxy Server option, make sure you click Use
12. Type the IP address and port number to your local computer (from step 4 above)
13. Finish configuring, test connection, make sure it connects
14. That's it. If the connection test works, you can now sign into PSN with 3.15 and bypass the 3.21 firmware check

Note that you must keep PS3.ProxyServer.GUI running when you want to use your PS3 until we get CFW

Your right there. They should mention what they are actually updating clearly for us all to see. Possibly the slim models had it available in the background to install another OS but just didn't show the option, so they've now completely remove any possibility of any OS's to be installed. Cheeky muppets.

Not sure what connection you fella's have but it only took about 3-4 mins to download then another 3-4 to install the update for me.

The next system software update for the PlayStation 3 (PS3) system will be released on April 1, 2010 (JST), and will disable the “Install Other OS� feature that was available on the PS3 systems prior to the current slimmer models, launched in September 2009. This feature enabled users to install an operating system, but due to security concerns, Sony Computer Entertainment will remove the functionality through the 3.21 system software update.

In addition, disabling the “Other OS� feature will help ensure that PS3 owners will continue to have access to the broad range of gaming and entertainment content from SCE and its content partners on a more secure system.

Consumers and organizations that currently use the “Other OS� feature can choose not to upgrade their PS3 systems, although the following features will no longer be available;

- Ability to sign in to PlayStation Network and use network features that require signing in to PlayStation Network, such as online features of PS3 games and chat

- Playback of PS3 software titles or Blu-ray Disc videos that require PS3 system software version 3.21 or later

- Playback of copyright-protected videos that are stored on a media server (when DTCP-IP is enabled under Settings)

- Use of new features and improvements that are available on PS3 system software 3.21 or later

For those PS3 users who are currently using the “Other OS� feature but choose to install the system software update, to avoid data loss they first need to back-up any data stored within the hard drive partition used by the “Other OS,� as they will not be able to access that data following the update.

It's for both as this update also patches a security bug in mp4 movie file handling which could have been exploited.
