Counter Strike Source Questions

Does anyone know anything about Counter Strike Source? It's old, I know...

A small group of us (4-8) used to play counterstrike (the original half-life 1 version) at lunchtime over the network at work and were thinking of trying again with CS source (the half-life 2 version). However I believe it needs to connect to steam every session for licensing? Does anyone know if it's possible to use it with a local server and network switch? Does it have to connect to the steam server to authenticate? Once or every time it's played?

Obviously any game related sites are blocked, so connecting is not possible. And no hacks please, need to keep it legal

I think you have to do everything through steam these days.

You'll need to install CS:S though Steam on each PC, and you'll need to connect each PC to the Internet *once* - after that, you can put Steam into Offline Mode you can create LAN games from then on.

Unless your IT dept are very lenient, I doubt the ports for Steam will be open!

I was going to say the same thing as the last poster, it's unlikely you'll be able to use Steam.

You could try something like Kong or Soldat. Both are great fun, and you shouldn't have any difficulty setting up a LAN game.

There is also a top-down version of CS, CS2D, but I remember finding it a little dull playing with bots, may be better with others though.

And it is possible to play offline with one licensed copy and several computers - you need to install it separately and as long as you play offline, it will work.
