How do I improve my ping.

Have recently changed to O2 for my broadband. speed is similar to previous but ping is lower/random. having problems with MW2 lag etc so looking for ways to set up better.

Set up is xbox with wireless n adapter
Netgear GDN3500 router/modem plugged in in other room and unfortunately not the one with the main phone box either.. cant hard wire it untill I have done a loft conversion and turned the room with router into a games room.

random, any where between 46 and 150ms. my line goes from A+ to crap and that can be a few minutes between tests.

And that's wired into the router?

46 is bad enough, What did you get before you changed supplier?

Pretty much the only answer is to go to your isp and complain.

It sounds like the problem is much further down the line from your house, in which case there's little, if anything, you can do to improve it, other than change supplier.

Certain ISPs are better for gaming than others for this reason, you need one with the fewest hops to your gaming server as possible.

46 isn't that bad.

My ping on pingtest is about 59 and I never get any lag or high pings in games.

46 is fine, should be able to play smooth as with that. If your on wireless it can add lag to games so try it with a wire direct it the router. Make sure your not running bit torrent or something in the background too

It's possible to speak to your ISP as well, you may have interleaving turned on which can give higher pings (but less errors and more bandwidth). Some ISP's also have settings they can apply to your line for gaming, but they usually have some sort of trade off.

Ping is only part of the story, low is obviously better, but a low ping with lots of packet loss will be just as unplayable as a high ping.

If you run Ping Plotter it will show you more detail on your route to the host and you can where any spikes/ losses are occurring - if they're further on from the first couple of hops the problem will likely be at the ISP.

I think once my ping was 349....but I don't seem to lag too much if there's no other strain on the connection....weird eh..
