Space sims!

You know the story driven space fighter pilot games that used to be the rage of the 90's things like X-wing vs Tie Fighter, Wing Commander, I-war, Freespace 1 & 2 etc etc

I keep thinking a new modern version of X-wing would be fantastic.

Very small market for it I guess.
People don't wanna play simple on-rail games, yet don't want to learn to play complex ones either.

X3 is supposed to be good, and ofc eve.
A new rogue squadron would be awesome too boxedin

lucas arts for some time have been rumoured to be developing the next big x-wing/tie fighter game

but thats been the case from last year though

there's stuff on the pc which is sorta similar

i loved frontier and it wouldnt be too hard to port it over to the 360 or sommet.

its generally though considered a dead genre. sadly.

try vega strike which is somethign similar fan base driven

Good point.

I wonder how much fun it would be to play X-Wing on-line with all other pilots being humans too!?!?!?

Or even WW2 Battle of Britain type of game with human players......

I don't know though if part of it is because they are not too easy to play on a Console - ideally you want a PC with joystick and the world's collection of keys to press to be able to fly properly and adjust weapons etc....

If you have not played freelancer, its worth a look. 2003, so not ancient, but by no means cutting edge. Decent single player storyline.

Dont bother. I was digging that out last week as I now have access to a joystick again. Doesnt run on Vista or 7. Now the laptop has eaten my Freelancer disc too so Im stuck with Generals for PC.

I still have my Freespace 2 CD's! Forgot about them, and X-Wing Alliance - the latter would be most appreciated if it were remade..

I have tried many times to get into the X3 games, but failed. Am sure they're very good, but I simply haven't the time to learn them!

ETA - Just realised I have something called DarkStar One in my Steam library, that I forgotton about and never played...may give that a go..

Freelancer works on both Vista and Windows 7 (although the "planet side" graphics are a bit sketchy). Gutted to hear that Starlancer won't work, loved that game frown

Current space sim I am playing is X3 Terran Conflict, takes a while to get going (need to trade/do missions to gain credits) but it's awesome once you get your first battle fleet together biggrin

Lots of online mods for it too smile

Again I'd love an updated version of X-wing vs Tie fighter, I guess I'll just go back to Rogue Squadron on the Gamecube which still has good graphics IMO

X3 is good, find myself losing hours on that, On another note, Dosbox and frontier is another way to waste a few hours.

yeah I like X3 but sometimes it just feels a little too big and lacking good strong story/voice acting. Thats what I love about Free Space 1 & 2 the voice acting is fantastic and the story is written rather well.

Space sims? I know it isn't quite a sim as you don't properly fly spaceships, but Eve Online is pretty good. I say "pretty good"... I mean it's so good I daren't subscribe.

Closest fix would be Battlefield 1942, Battle of Britain map, on the PC.

I've got that somewhere. There's a Battlestar Galactica mod for it - http://www.bsg-galactica.com/

It's multi-player only on their servers, as I hate restricted multi-player games so I have no idea what it's like.

It's a Damn shame. The x-wing/TIE fighter games were classic, and i've no idea why they've never released a new one. Lucasarts were apparently remaking one after they did the same with Monkey Island...but it all went quiet.

Freelancer was quite good. David brazen has been working on Elite4 for about 15 years...

If you want to see a massively impressive space engine, do a search on YouTube for 'Infinity' or just check this out:

The space-to-surface stuff is seriously impressive.

I used to play Escape Velocity on my Mac all the time, the usual space trading, fighting and missions, but 2D (none of your fancy pants 3D here hehe ). Then they made Escape Velocity: Override, and a few years ago made EV: Nova, which had (big woo) 3d rendered ships, still a 2d game though. It accepted plug ins into the game and there were very many ships, missions and universes added on smile .

Did you ever play the Star Wars mod before it was shut down by Lucasarts? biggrin Someone put hell of a lot of work into it, I just hope that Lucasarts employed them for future X-wing games rather than just getting upset that someone could make a proper Star Wars game.

I only played the Demo of 1942 and it only had 2 planes? And there were (as in BF:BC2) people who just stood there the entire time waiting for a plane to appear then they nicked it.

I was hoping more for a game where you can fly Spitfires against ME109s and the BF110s/Dorniers (which would all be piloted by humans) and perhaps even B-17s against FW190s etc with humans flying and even playing gunner (with computer gunners if not enough people) etc... Now how cool would that be?

I mean, strafing along a line of Dorniers in a Hurricane as they try to bomb your airfield etc.. or flying a B-17 over Germany on a bombing run with human pilots attacking you...
