Clearing out the garage at Paolow towers the other day I came across my old MS sidewinder wheel (broken) and with a glint of nostalgia remembered the fun I had playing various sims but most of all playing in the Pistonheads Grand Prix Legends league.
I had a quick look on youtube for vids of GPL gameplay and it brought it all back. However, I know that support for GPL, even a few years ago was a little thin and really wonder if a game exists at the moment that matches the vehicular physics and realism from GPL?
I appreciate this might seem to hardcore racers to be a somewhat banal question but I have been out of the loop for some 4 years with regard to racing sims so would appreciate some pointers!
I dont mind what the racing is - touring cars, F1, historics just as long as its long on realism and short on 'arcade' gameplay smile

Still one of the best sims I've ever played. Such a fine line between going quickly and having a big off.

I remember doing a full GP distance with damage on around Monza in the Lotus once, I have never been so knackered after a PC or Xbox race. thumbup

I would say rFactor is currently the best sim available, a more expensive version, rFactor Pro is used by 5 F1 teams in their driver simulators.

If it's used in F1, you know it's good.

ETA

rFactor has a huge number of cars and tracks available, many from this site...

very impressed by both iracing and rfactor - rfactor looks to be fairly awesome! both support racing at brands so both are in the theoretical running though!
When I replace my defunct wheel is there a better option than a logitech?

And another thing! The damage model in GPL was awesome - why do so many games have cars that just 'bounce off' each other rather than incur damage?

Not really.

Most of us have the older G25 but the newer wheel is the G27

You can get some very expensive wheels that might be more expensive, but the higher end logitech wheels are highly regarded.

The lovely thing about GPL is that they didn't specifically model the crashes. The physics model was so good they just happened as they would in real life. A totally infuriating game that I 'wasted' many hours on.

rF Pro is nothing like rFactor, except the basic engine. It allows massive customisation (and I don't mean addon cars and tracks) and the F1 teams spend millions per year on these customisations. Each install is different at each team, as is the hardware they use to run / use it.

rFactor is great, and I play it daily, but it's not the real deal.

I'm fully aware of the fact that F1 teams customise rF Pro, and the fact that it is designed to communicate with their in-car hardware for maximum realism.

The fact that the company produces software used in F1 suggests that the commercial version is likely to have a high degree of realism.

I also know of several racing drivers who practice on rFactor.

I have a copy of GPL but have never been able to get it running properly on my custom build with XP 32bit. Whenever I install it I get a flashing/checkerboard effect running over the menu screens making it nigh on impossible to see what you're doing. Any help?
