Not the typical type of game that gets discussed here but I have been completely addicted to this the past week. I am pretty sure Minecraft was inspired by this as it has some similar gameplay parts although Dwarf Fortress is way more in depth.

It's a bit overwhelming to start with and takes a while to get used to the Ascii graphics but once you work out what is going on it's easy to lose hours/days/weeks to it without noticing.

It basically involves creating a fortress for a bunch of dwarves, everything is managed down to quite fine details and you can build some pretty intricate traps to keep your fortress safe(or fk it up and flood your fortress with magma). The combat logs are particularly gruesome.

Currently building a fortress on a volcano, isnt going very well though since there is very little plant life and freshwater.

I've only just managed to ween myself off Minecraft, don't drag me back into Dwarf Fortress!

It is a great game, I agree, although it has a vertical learning curve! If you look on the forums you can download the game with a tilepack included, so you can tell what things are more easily. Also, using Dwarf Therapist (I think that's what it's called) helps a lot.

Argh I'm tempted to play it now...!

Im using the Mayday(i think thats what it's called) tileset now which is helping a lot. I've found some water in a huge cavern 25 Z-levels below where I want my farms, looks like im going to have to build a solution to pump it up without being killed by whatever nasty things are in the cavern.

Haven't used Dwarf Therapist yet ill probably download it later, you need all the help you can with this game!

I never figured out pumping, I always just dug channels from a pool or river on the surface in order to irrigate my farms.

Looking at the site it seems there haven't really been many updates since July which is when I last played it, so I might give it a miss for a bit. The military was a bit messed up last time I played frown

Some time later....

It's released on Steam!

Not that I need another game in the pile of shame but DF has always felt like something to conquer, albeit with the ability to walk away from abject failure (ahem EVE).

Long time fans are of course plastering rave reviews on the steam page but then I'm not sure how reviewable it even is.

I had enough fun with the free version I'll probably jump in over the Xmas break.
