xbox live question

I bought a xbox360 Resident Evil about a year ago as I really wanted a red one! Anyway, since then I've only ever played it just hooked up to the tv, never online. As such I had a username and loads of gamerpoints from the different games I've been playing.

Tonight I decided to plug it into the router, just for a look, and got a months free gold membership of xbox live, which was nice, except I had to create a new username. So now when I'm signed in to xbox live I don't have any of the points or any achievements that I had previously accrued on my profile which means I can't download any of the free stuff that seem to require them.

Is there any way to transfer my points from my 'standard' profile to my xbox live one?

Any other tips for a xbox live newbie?

Looks like you've burnt the free month, but points are available from a number of places, not just by handing credit card details to MS.

Bugger. According to that, I could delete my contact info from my live account, sign out of live, sign back in on my original profile, sign up for live again and my points etc will be carried over. BUT I won't get the remainder of my free month of gold membership and would have to buy a new one. Is that right? How come it never signed my original profile up for live anyway?

Noticed about the subscription prices and codes while having a search, but thanks, it's good to know they work.
