Having had Forza 3 for a week now, I've got quite good at the single player game, using only stability control and "normal" difficulty setting for the computer controlled cars.

When I first got it, I jumped right in to XBox live and found myself being left for dust by everyone. I thought it was just a lack of practice but having tried again last night, I'm still being left behind by almost everyone.

So whats going wrong? The online games seem to only let you use standard un-modified cars so it's a fairly level playing field. However in last night's race I used the F355 with big rear spoiler and was constantly left behind under accelerationfrown

EDIT: Can someone correct the thread title for me?

Did you use a car from your garage for the races or standard ones?

Are you using a wheel and pedals or hand controller to drive?

I think there's only one race type online where you can only use standard cars...

most cars can be modded to have 4WD so will be very fast off the line...

Practice, practice, practice. Find a decent tune, grab a ghost and do lots and lots of laps.

This. Plus I would turn off the stability management and go for a manual gearbox

Only if the host chooses it to be this way.99.9% of my online experience was tuned cars.If you are picking a standard car, even if its rated close to another in class terms and the others are tuned, you will likely have very little chance (even a lower class car with better tyres to bump the class up again ccould be enough to see you off).If you have tuned cars you have created yourself, you need to pick them from your garage when deciding what to race.Look for the garage icon as apposed to the standard car list, enter your garage and pick one.

Also, don't forget, some people have played this game since release and have dedicated masses of time to it.They will have setups galore and know every track inside out and backwards. It's really a case of finding the best car for the track and being bloody good at it - and that takes time.

There are "production hoppers" now as well which are pretty good since you are only as good as the car, so you need to be able to race well before you can do well in those. Most of the other races are a bit of a toss up depending on what cars are being used. Turn off the STM since it applies the brakes every time you slide (which slows you down a lot) and use the manual gears (again this takes a lot of practice as the shift point for every car is different) and you should go a bit quicker.

Using the manual gearbox is a must if you want to compete online, I had to learn to use it when I was on Xbox live because the auto is so rubbish in forza and this is after years of only using automatic.
Look at the scoreboards for each class to get to know which cars tend to be quick in each class and then get the tunes for those, then its just lots of practice and some talent, I was never much good at it if I'm honest.

Thanks for all the pointers. I need to have a better look around the options when selecting a race on XBox Live as I thought they were all for standard cars only.

The thought of using a manual gearbox is interesting too - I've used a manual ever since Gran Turismo 2 on the PS2 so that will take some getting used to, I think.

It's pretty natural after a while. Using manual w/clutch and heel and toeing on the standard controller is another matter though...;)
