Good ancient city building PC game?

Hi All,

I've been playing CivCity: Rome for a few days, which is a bit like a cross between SimCity and Civilization. It's the first city building game I've played since SimCity 2000, years ago.

It's an ok game. Satisfying to build a well laid out city, but it has its limitations. Now that I've got a taste for the genre, I fancy something a bit better, but on the same lines.

I had a look on Gamespot and Children of the Nile looks quite good. Does anyone have any recommendations? What about something older like Caesar III or Pharaoh?

What about evolving into RTS territory, or is that not your thing?

If not then I would personally recommend "Lords of the Realm 2", it's focused more towards the fighting but the city building and trading was quite fun.

Sounds good, but I was hoping to find something a little more recent. I had the first Lords of the Realm on the Amiga

CivCity is real time. Is Caesar and the like turn based then?

It's more building than fighting that I'm interested in at the moment.

Pharo(sp?) was an awesome game, you can probably pick it up quite cheap nowdays.

Civ 5 is more of an empire building game than constructing a single splendid city.

I've just been reading about Zeus: Master of Olympus, which looks to be the sequel to Pharaoh (still 10 years old though!) It gets pretty good reviews, so I might see if I can get hold of a copy.

Might have to fire up my Win98 pc to play it Is development of this genre now dead?

OP, have you checked out any of the later versions of SimCity? It has got a lot better since the version you played.

I had Settlers on the Amiga too. I'll take a look at that series, forgot all about it actually.

I bought SimCity 3000 a few years ago, but never played it as I couldnt be bothered to learn it at the time. It seemed quite complicated compared to 2000.
