I wasn't going to write any complaints until a few minutes ago when something really angered me.

So. The long awaited game that's basically used a bunch of PS2 model cars to bulk up the numbers. It's a great simulator, possibly the best on the market. Better than Forza 3? Yes. By a lot? No.

Firstly, everything is overly complicated. The menu system is cluttered and has far too many areas you have to go into to find stuff. A simple slide out style would've been cleaner and easier to navigate.

Secondly, the AI. It's bad enough that half the time they're completely oblivious to your existence on the track and that there's little difference to the way the AI work and a scalecrtix set. What's really absurd is that in some of the events where you can be disqualified for certain things, the AI may overtake you and slam on the brakes in front of you, disqualifying you. They'll also drive into you or drive you off the track with the same effect.

Thirdly, the disqualification system is too selective. If a player is to be disqualified for an action, there should be some predictability. It's absurd to have it so you can slide across and smash into the car two places ahead of you, but if you just nudge the car one place ahead you get disqualified. The same with going off track, if that is sufficient for disqualification, it shouldn't let you go off the track in some places.

Fourthly, the online system is too difficult to navigate. This is really tied to the menu system, but it's far too complicated for what it is. They should've taken lessons for polyphony,

Fifth. Shadows. The flag shadows look like goddamn 16bit game graphics. They're blocky, they look like a low framerate animated gif and it would be better if they didn't exist.
Tied to this, tyre smoke rendering is abysmal on some cars. Make a smokestorm with the zonda R and pay close attention to the back of it. It looks glitchy and pixelated.

And finally, the single thing that pissed me off most
THERE'S A fkING GERMAN FLAG NEXT TO THE MINI MINI COOPER 1.3i '98.

I fully understand that Mini is now owned by BMW. I understand that, at the time, Mini was operating under rover and rover was owned by BMW, but to my knowledge, the mini was designed and built in England as a British vehicle. I don't see an Indian flag next to Jaguar. I don't see a Malaysian flag next to Lotus. I don't see a german flag next to Lamborghini either. I don't know why this irritated me, I guess I feel like it's another hand trying to erode British heritage. I doubt they deliberately did it, it's probably done for ease since it falls under the german Mini brand, though it wasn't really a brand in 98. Whatever. GT5 is pissing me off, seems like polyphony have been sitting around circle jerking for the past few years and finally dump something off on sony to shut people up.

It really is the most frustrating, unfinished game. Brilliant in some respects, but lazy and rushed in others.

I was still playing FM3 over a year after launch, even when pissed off about the non-appearance of the second Jalopnik pack, and whilst GT5 is getting the most play my PS3's had since I bought god-knows how many years ago, I can't see it holding my interest the way Forza has.

Still haven't had a Mk.I MR2 show up in the used-car garage yet (though it may dissapoint when it does, judging by some of the standard car modeling).

And Laguna Seca's Corkscrew... wtf? Hit the top of the climb, all floaty for the sharp left-hander, dive downhill and level-off on the right-hander, all pressed into the asphalt - except in GT5 there's no sense of an elevation change and the downill dive ain't long enough.

Overall, a little... underwhelmed.

Regards the Mini perhaps the game was tested at Polyphony's remote testing island where they think the war is still on?

Trouble is, I felt the same at FM3. FM3 was just FM2 with cockpits. a good 30% of the cockpits didn't work properly (and still haven't been fixed) and the rest of the content was just a direct port from 2.

Lazy developers!

By reading your description i fail to see how its better than froza.

Graphics - Beat Forza, but on Forza we can atleast use incar view in every car, but GT5 wins in graphics although in places they look very blocky, pretty most of time.

Gameplay - GT5 is the better sim, Forza aint really a sim, but Forzas AI is good, it gives you room, yet is aggresive at time also. Even on Hard though Forza is very easy. Online Forza is perfection, close racing.

I think Polyphony or whatever there called tried too hard, i was ready to get a PS3 for this but the base of my enjoyment is online multiplayer, so i wont bother.

Im not attacking GT5 at all in this, its clearly a good game, but i fail to see where 5 years of delays have took it, to keep delaying a game just brings the hype on harder.

I got one! The Supercharger and the standard one show up from time to time. Keep ~30k in the bank for when one does pop up. THe supercharger drives very nicely, and it's one of the cars that doesn't suffer so much from being a low poly count model.... being as the car is made out of about 6 surfaces anyway!

The actual races online are fine, they feel smooth and aren't too laggy despite me playing against someone in NY. My complaint is solely that it's a long process to play against your PSN friends, unnecessarily so. If you just want to jump in, it's a bit quicker, but they really should've just copied, oh I don't know, ANY console FPS's online system.

Are you using your lounge feature to race your friends? If not you should, its so easy to set up a race.... it take 10 secs from your main page to get into your lounge. only your friend can enter your lounge. no need to go into the main online section just meet you friends in yours or their lounge. click on the community tab and then coffee shape mug in the bottom left. to get into your friends lounge just click on their icon and do the same.

I'm still trying to find one, really wanted to have one as my starter but had to settle for a bright yellow MX5 instead.
I have to say I'm enjoying the game but it just seems like GT4 to me. (A sequel similar to the original game, madness I know...)
It's a shame they've not done any of the manufacturer and country specific races since they made up a big chunk of GT4s events.

Totally agree with the OP. I'm just glad I waited for it to be released before deciding wether to spend hundreds of pound on a PS3 and wheel.

The graphics are sometimes amazing but usually quite average, the handling is great but done alot better on pc, sound and AI are abysmal, the obtuse menus and general game design is infuriating and the game just feels dated and unpolished.

GT5 is a good driving game but not great, which it should have been after such a long dev time and massive budget. In all the years PD have spent accurately modeling headlights and importing GT4 assets, racing games have moved on and overtaking the GT series in many respects.

So is that how you set a friends only race up then? Does a message pop up to say "xyz is in your lounge" and then you just go in, choose track and parameters and go? Couldn't find anything in the manual about online races with friends so was a bit bemused!

banghead Yes, you do.

It was 5 1/2 years since GT4 was released, it may have been in development for 5-6 years but wasn't delayed by that time, unless you expected GT5 to come out a few months after GT4..... wink

Back on topic, there are more strange choices for determining countries for the cars, for example the premium Focus ST is eligible for Euro races, whereas the MKI Focus RS is counted as American.confused

The 98 Mini did have me a little peeved, only because I purchased it for the specific intention of using it as my weapon of choice for one of the UK car events, spent an obscene amount of money on it and then got denied entry frown

On the plus side the game did award me a Loony Award for spending such crazy amounts of dosh on it!!! hehe

Right you think that is bad.... go to your garage and look at the information on the mini cooper 1.3I 98' Its says the engine is a 1271cc and was made this size at the request of John cooper garages....... fk me the information is not even close to true, let alone accurate. Wiki would have given those fking designers a better input. I would be ashamed if i had put the detail on those cars......

I don't actually think you can even machine a 1271cc engine......

Looks pretty spot on to me when you compare GT5 to real life as per this youtube clip

ok from my knowledge the parts are not available off the shelf to make that displacement. Conrods, crank, pistons etc etc...

+1, GT5's version seems pretty close to the iRacing track as well, which is laser scanned for accuracy.
