PS3 - Anybody else had the problem of HDD data rebuild?

So far today all I have been doing is trying to get the ps3 to actually let me play! On startup all I get is a screen saying: "the hard disk system is corrupted and will be restored" the only thing you can do is click ok...can't get onto anything else at all.
It does this restore and then comes back to the same screen and want me to do it again. This has been going on since about 10am!
Anyone got any ideas?

Update***
Looks like it needs a new hard drive! Losing all my data but on the plus side I can get a 500gb hard drive for about £50!! And it's apparently a straight swap and doesn't cause further problems...shall be backing data up from now on though.
Cheaper than sending it to the "menders" at least
