Why can't they replicate the real sound of the cars in GT5? Granted some sound ok but why not all of them? Its all good and well them sounding ok on a replay but why not when your driving the car?

Take the WRC cars in GT5, where's the popping and banging?

The sound of the cars is what makes a good driving game, Race Pro and even PGR4 managed this. Why not GT5 and Forza?

Is there some technical reason?

I hear some popping and banging out of the rear speakers, but it's not really in your face stuff. We always assumed the in car sounds on Turismo, simulated wearing a crash helmet, hence a bit pants..

I started playing GT5 tonight and thought the car sounds weren't really very good. Having been spoiled at so many PH meets, I know what a lot of the cars should sound like.

Before you get too upset, run your favorite cars in either B-Spec mode or a replay. It's particularly "Premium" cars, but almost all cars sound pretty good IMO, particulalrly with upgraded exhausts.
I think the "Bumper" camera and "Interior" camera that most will use when driving apply filters to the sound of the car to make them sound more "realistic" from the POV of sitting in the car or sitting on the bonnet.

That said, some cars just sound awful. The Mclaren MP4 12C for example. Sounds Like a hoover.

I'am not upset, I'am gutted! wink Just thought GT5 was gonna nail the sounds of the cars after so long.

Like I said some sound ok but why can't they nail the real sound? We all know as pistonheads how cars sound. smile

In fairness, dont forget the sounds can only be as good as your speakers, so can the speakers from your Samsung LCD really come close to replicate the noise from a fire breathing 1000bhp monster??
(im not saying this is the only reason and agree the sounds are always poor)
Personally I would prefer the sound from outside of the car to be default for any view, it may not be as realistic, but I think it would feel more real to the gamer.

Not that I don't agree with you all, but have any of you tried making car sounds.

Its bloody complicated and extremely difficult.

We had a go at it on my degree in my second year, just a very basic car accel generator. You record sounds at different rpms, then mix them and change frequency/pitch etc to make it sound as if its accelerating. In theory, you should be able to get a pretty good car sound, but because of how the exhausts/engines work I don't believe that you'd ever be able to get a perfect sound this way.
Apparently, there is also a way of creating the sounds, by modelling the physical properties of the engine and exhaust, and basically making the engine, I've not seen an example of this so don't know how good it is, but I'd imagine you should be able to get a pretty good sound this way. Only downside is it'd probably be very computationally heavy.

Think it's a mixture of the recordings being of the engine not under load (a car accelerating will sound different to one sat still and revving, but the GT people record the latter) and the filters that are applied when in different views. I always remember to get the best sounds on GT2 (maybe 3, long time ago!) you had to go to bumper cam and look backwards...

It cant be worse than the generic screeching noise they use for skidding wheels. I swear its the same wav file they used in GT1.

Not impressed by most of the sounds in GT5. The sounds in Forza are alright, the Porsche Panamera sounds miles better than most other cars in the game though. I haven't tried it in GT5, but if you want to really hear the engines at their best in Forza, put it in manual and accelerate very slowly up and down the gears, you get a good feel for the character of them. In "comeptition" mode where you are just accelerating and braking as quickly as possible they do sound a bit flat.

Then play the WRC 2010 game and lol as a shoestring budget game nails the sound of turbocharged inline 4s, complete with all the pops, bangs and whooshes. It also feels a lot faster than Forza or GT5 too.

No idea about GT5, but with Forza 3 the sounds are great well at least for the cars I use. The V8 sounds differ as they should and it's obvious whether it's a Jap V8 or yank one or even an LS. Playing through speakers in my T.V.

I don't rate the games particularly highly, but Need For Speed series generally does a decent job of mimicking engine / exhaust noise.
