Just peaked at the minecraft thread, not read it all yet but it got me thinking aboot sim city.
Last played it on the Amiga.
I fancy playing it again, but I see that Sim City 4 is 7 years old, though Sim City Societies is only 3.

I still play Sim City 4
Absolutely brilliant game! Especially with the Rush Hour Expansion.
Socieeties is a slgiht move away from the 'original' Sim City style....and, imo, not as good.
If you liked the original....I'd seriously suggest Sim City 4! None of the city sims since have really matched up to 4 with regards to management of the economy, and interaction between cities (basically, everything that made the originals good).
Oh, and Sim City 4 is still gorgeous to look at!!!!

Problem a lot of people had was growing too quickly, and spending all their money at thee start. The trick is to have patience and 'gradually' grow.
Managing the taxes is key to ensure you are getting the income you need.
Start basic, don't build services until you have a stable income....as you're really don't need them until your city is of sufficient size to warrrant them. You really don't neeed schools, police stations, hospitals, and the likee until you have a decent sized city. You'll need a small fire station to catch fires...but apart from that it's best to ignore the services until you can afford them.
Granted....the ingame tutorials were pretty much worthless, and led people down the wrong route. But, the Sim City 4 community was a brilliant place for tips and tactics. It did have a steep learning curve.

I loved A-Train but it's probably quite dated by now!OpenTTD is an open-source Transport Tycoon engine and has had a lot of improvement - it's still very addictive even though the game it's based on is 17 years old
