GT5 - Steering wheel or normal controller?
Discussion
As above, get a wheel.
With a controller it's a mediocre experience. With a wheel the game is transformed and it's a joy to drive. Te handling (on premium cars in particular) is spookily good at times.
I have a G25 which I got for 100 pounds, now sadly discontinued (and not officially supported by the game though it works fine). Any of the 'official' GT wheels will suit you down to the ground and alsowork on PC as a bonus.

Wheel for racing, though I've found it's easier to catch a slide with the controller when I'm drifting, I can't apply armfuls of oppo quick enough with the DFP, even with the FF turned down and the power assist on.
I also changed the controller layout to the Forza scheme, and that combined with the trigger extenders my brother bought me for Christmas, I can modulate the throttle/brake just as well as I can with the pedals.

Sure it's harder to go lock to lock on a wheel, but much more fun! I think if you stick with the wheel you'll soon learn to control your drifts better, and predict/instigate the slide angle, rather than relying on reacting to what the car is doing.I honestly can't understand why anyone would choose to use a PS3 controller over a wheel, just to get a better time or score! But that's just me, I'm a stickler for realism....

I had a loan of a DFGT wheel for 4 weeks and I didn't like it.
Don't get me wrong, it did add to the game but setting it up was a pain It had a wheelstand but I only have 1 big TV in my flat which is in my living room. Moving it out and in of the room when i had folk round etc was a pain.
If you can set it up without having to move it, I'm sure it is much better. It just annoyed me having it sitting in the living room all the time when I wasn't using it.
I like to just come in, sit down and get on with playing. With the wheel I was coming in, setting the wheel up then getting comfy etc etc.
I am pretty lazy however so the benefit of having a wheel didn't outweigh the pain in the backside of moving it and storing it. Something to think about if you have a small house I suppose.
Given the opportunity, I'd have something set-up all the time.

For anyone with a DFP that does not know, you can change the wheel to 200 degree rotation from 900 by pressing Select, R3 and right paddle at the same time. The right hand led will go out, and you should hear a click. It makes it more sensitive, but it should be easier to get lock on quickly for drifting. I would also think that most race cars dont have 900 degrees of steering lock, so technically its more realistic!!I also changed the controller layout to the Forza scheme, and that combined with the trigger extenders my brother bought me for Christmas, I can modulate the throttle/brake just as well as I can with the pedals.

900 degrees is 2.5 turns lock to lock, which is about right for most road based cars. Racing cars and especially single seaters will have less agreed, but still significantly more than 200 degrees, a 400 degree setting (just over a turn lock to lock) would be more realistic for single seaters I suspect.Edited by LocoBlade on Sunday 16th January 21:49

The handling model used for premium cars is the same as that used for standard cars. Any difference is just down to placebo effect (ie, the car looks better so it must drive better). Trust me, there is only one game physics engine. With a controller it's a mediocre experience. With a wheel the game is transformed and it's a joy to drive. I was wondering about that too, although they may have spent more time investigating/recording/inputting relevant parameters of premium cars to allow the physics engine to recreate them better?
I know for example the stock gearing of the Caterham Fireblade is all wrong, it's geared for about 200mph which is way over what can be achieved with the stock bike gearbox and regular diff / wheel sizes, and so accelerates like a slug in comparison to a real car and hardly gets out of second gear at places like Tskuba. Looking at the stock gearing all the ratios are correct and the final drive is correct but they've forgotten that a bike engine has a primary reduction ratio of about 1.5 (the small cog on the crank drives a big cog on the clutch), so it should be geared about 50% lower than what it is in the game. That makes me think that a lot of the cars it was simply a matter of plug in the basic figures they could find from manufacturers etc whereas perhaps the premium cars (or some of them) were analysed a bit more closely.
