Activision last night confirmed that it had shut its Guitar Hero business unit and cancelled its upcoming GH game. It signals the end of the road for a franchise which came to define 'party' gaming for the best part of a decade.

After two years of steeply declining sales, we've made the decision to close our Guitar Hero business unit and discontinue development on our previously playing Guitar Hero title for 2011.

Despite a remarkable 92 rating on DJ Hero 2, a widely well-regarded Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock, as well as the 90-plus rated release from our most direct competitor, demand for peripheral-based music games declined at a dramatic pace.

Given the considerable licensing and manufacturing costs associated with this genre, we simply cannot make these games profitably based on current economics and demand. Instead, what we'll do is focus our time and energies on marketing and supporting our strong catalogue of titles and downloadable content, especially to new consumers, as the install base for hardware continues to grow.
shame they cancelled true crime: hong kong though. guitar hero was a definate overkill. dunno what those goth kids will do now..

Learn to play a real fking guitar, instead of thinking that pressing 4 coloured buttons in a certain order = a game.

Its 5 buttons.rofl

I liked the concept when it came out. I guess the makers were hoping once everyone had the titles and the instruments they could just keep pumping out songs for download. A 'musical cash cow'if you will.

You're not seriously suggesting a drunk person can pick up a guitar and play it and it be fun. It takes hours of practice. There's nothing fun about a drunk person who can't play, using a musical instrument.

GH...not so much.

You would think so wouldn't you. It's actually quite a brilliant game imo, my kids loved it for a while while me and the misses would jump on every now and then. Just a shame they didn't put more recognisable songs on thier than what they had.

I think its silly for them stop making it, it must have made them bzillions & I'm sure it would have made bzillions more too. Looks like they're putting all thier eggs in 1 basket with MW3.

as glad as i am to see it gone i do think its a sad state of gaming where companies like activision dont want to take any risks what so ever with games that are different

i was readin mvc once and some independant gamer shop said they just arent interested unless its got call of duty or gta in it...

If we're talking about party fun then Kinect has really got that market covered now. I had a proper go last night and I was seriously impressed, bearing in mind I'm a PC gamer who prefers serious games.

I think the problem with GH is that after you've nailed the first few songs that you like, it's pretty much more of the same and kids will get bored of doing it so they'll either move on to something else or have a strong desire to learn to play a proper guitar.
