jogging down memory lane last night with some friends and got to talking about old games we used to play. No one else could remember one of my favorites called Carrier Command. Basically you has an aircraft carrier to control, with a ampibouse truck and aircraft, with the idea to go around an set of islands conquring them - whilst an opposing force did similar. well somethign like that anyway.

Does such a modern eqivilant exist today ? I've found a website that seems to be suggesting a new version, but it's all abit dated

aw I used to love this as well - and was dead excited when I heard it was being remade, but have heard nothing about it since so assume its dead frown

A few years ago there was a game, Hostile Waters I think, that was similar to Carrier Command - but I'm not sure of anything else particularly similar

I used to play this for hours on my ST. Brilliant game. They should re-release it on iPhone.

I had it on the Amiga. Was ok and had a bit of fun with it. I was too busy playing Geoff Crammonds Formula 1 biggrin

Loved it, Have it somewhere on my computer along with Elite and Frontier Elite 2. I have made hints at certain people that, for my birthday I would like an old AMIGA 500 if they can get.

Is there anyway of getting it to work on a Win7 pc? Have downloaded the torrent and would like to get it working.

Played this years ago and although it looked dated the gameplay was great!

Elite and Elite 2 was awesome! Wish Elite 3 was not canned...would be one of the largest MP games in the world!

Carrier Command - what a game!

Must be able to get this working on a modern PC using Dosbox or similar?

Search DOSBOX in google. totlxtc, I think there is rumor of David Braben working on something similar at the moment wink

Holy thread resurrection, Batman!

I just bought a copy of the revamped version. Such was my nostalgia for the original, I rather foolhardily did so without waiting tos ee a review of it. Fingers crossed it's not a dog, both (a) so I didn't waste £40 and (b) so it doesn't ruin my (doubtless rose-tinted) memories of the original.

I remember when I first noticed the little crates surfacing when you re-supplied your carrier, I was amazed that you could actually watch it happening! Stuff like that was so impressive back then.

I played it for 2-3 hours over the weekend and enjoyed it.

The campaign mode starts with a frankly rubbish FPS section, which feels completely out of place, but mercifully it doesn't last too long. After that, you're into the meat of the game, which will be familiar to anyone who played the original.

The campaign effectively serves as the tutorial - you start with one Walrus, then capture another on the first island you seize, and then acquire a Manta on the second island. I'm only on the 4th island so I'm not sure how long it takes to get a full complement of each - I've just unlocked the manufacturing ability, but can presently only make Walruses and machine guns.

If you don't want your hand held, you can jump straight into the other game mode, which allows you to do away with the story and set the parameters you want for the fight with the AI.

No multiplayer element at all, whci is a bit surprising, but TBH not a big deal for me - I'm not very much of an MP gamer.

All in all, if you remember the original fondly, it's well worth a look.

I suspect it won't sell well and, as a result, will probably be in the cheapies section of most online retailers within 6-8 weeks.....

Holy thread resurrection batman, etc...

This was released last week - https://store.steampowered.com/app/1489630/Carrier...

I searched to see if there was already a thread about it and found this one so thought I'd raise it from the dead instead. I bought it and played a little so far, interesting take on modernising the original. There is multiplayer and VR support but not tried either of those yet. There are some UI elements that are a bit clunky but I think overall I'm going to like it. Anyone else in?

I bought it and refunded it in the same evening, it's quite clearly unfinished but wasn't sold as an Early Access title. The AI, pathfinding and things getting stuck on the terrain were my main gripes.

Plus from reviews the game needs finishing first.
