PS3 Flashing red light - HELP!

PS3 overheated last night and now wont turn on.

Getting the flashing red light problem.

Seen a site offering to fix it for £70, can anyone give me recommendations or ideas to sort it?

As bad as this sounds, but buy a new one, That £70 will not bring any guarantee. It might work for another 3 years, or more than likely it will last 3 more days once fixed.

I recently had the YLOD (Yellow Light Of Death) failure, had a go at fixing it with a kit bought from eBay but no joy.

Bought a new 160gb from Blockbuster £234, just £5 more than Amazon but came with a months free Blu-ray and PS3 Game rentals. never watched so many films!

The new slim PS3 actually seems a better unit (I had the fat model before), loads up quicker, far quiter and apparntly uses a lot less electricity.

Not sure about the overheating failure but the reports from those who did manage to fix there PS3's after a YLOD failure is that it isn't long before it happens again.

Cut your losses and buy a new one.

Get it working, backup everything, retrieve the disc you probably had stuck inside, and buy a PS3 slim. The 'fixed' PS3 will last weeks at most.

And you can sell it on ebay; even as not working, it will sell.

I got my 80gb repaired under the sale of goods act by GAME at 2 years old. It lasted 6 weeks before it broke again. I got a 120gb slim off the bay for £150.

Think its time to invest in a new one then.

I am right in thinking I can just swap the Hard Drives over right?

'Fraid not. If you put the old hard drive in the new one it will format it.

I have an old style one at home with a busted blu ray drive thanks to my son

if yours is the older style you might be able to cannibalise the two

I was going to stick it on ebay but have never got round to it

What i cannot fathom is how both sony and xbox can c arry on selling product with on going faults and then have the cheak to charge us for repair when its a manufacturing fault

All products are made to tolerances. MTBF will be documented and I bet you it's surprisingly high.

In the instructions it says you should only play for a certain period and then allow yourself and the system to rest. Bet you don't though, do you? Me neither...

No matter how they word it games consoles are fragile today, they use crappy parts thats the problem, cases have no ventilation, heatsinks are rubbish.

As the man said yes you can swap the hard drive over but it will wipe it.

Anything you've downloaded from the PS Network is available for download again when you log back in with your new PS3 so those little games or add on packs you've bought are safe.

All you have lost is your game progress data.

When I finally accepted there was nothing I could do I decided it was a good oppurtunity to play a load of old and not so old games I've already completed or progressed as far as I was going to.

I've enjoyed re-doing GT5 from the start and having done it before I know not to waste my credits on cars I'll never use or over the top tuning.
