Following on from the 'Worse game' thread, how about the hardest games you've ever had to play? I can't really think of any others right now apart from 'Z' - Strategy game on the PSX / PC with Robots. I must of been.. 13? at the time of playing, pretty good on games, Red Alert for example, but couldn't get past the 2nd sodding level on Z! I can't for the life of me work out WHY it was so hard, but I could never do it despite trying it a whole lot.

This was back in the days before Gamefaqs.com and being able to google how to do things, we're talking when there was only strategy guides for the biggest games, at £10-15 a pop, and that's it.

So over to you guys, what's been your hardest games to play?

Blast Corps, anyone who played Diamond Sands in Backlash will have the rage permenantly etched into their brain. The last 2 levels in fact were nearly impossible.

That and the final level of one of the Burnout Games (2 or 3 I think) roughly a 10 minute lap in an Indycar in heavy traffic, to win you had to boost the entire way and not make a single mistake. If you had one crash you came last and if you so much as lifted off the throttle for a millisecond you couldn't win.

Most recent : Black ops - Zombies - Ascension. Gets very hard after level 20. Especially when the mystery box fks you over.

Warzone 2100 - Campaign mode got very tricky in the later missions.

Nuclear Strike - Always struggled with the mission in the DMZ. If my Apache lasted long enough , The US tanks i positioned did not. Ended up getting over run , but it was a fun mission.

Position Allied Battle tanks , APC's and supply trucks , take out SCUD missile launchers , Pick up ROK spy , Launch MLRS strike against enemy ammo and fuel dumps. Wait for North korean units to come through , Destroy multiple tunnels used by said forces , annihalate as many enemy tanks as possible using an AH-64 and VTOL A-10.

Good fun.

A couple spring to mind.

The first being Hook on the Atari ST.

A point and click type game, I could never get very far and only managed to extract some teeth for gold coins or something like that. Would love another go now!

The second would be Back to the Future: Part III on the Megadrive.

Bloody annoyingly difficult game where you were Doc riding a horse to catch up to the train Clara was on before it crashed down the ravine. You had to avoid items falling off the train, only did it once or twice and that was the first sodding level.

Games are easy these days! hehe

RC Stunt Copter

Quite unbelievable the contortions I got myself in playing that game until the early hours. Also amazing that it only cost me two controllers, ahem.

gauntlet is a masterpiece of design. hook 4 kids up to a machine and get them to keep pumping money into it ad infinitum.

why had nobody mentioned monkey island, easily the hardest game ever created.

when the circus master tells you, you need a helmet, that you would go the scumm bar and wait till the chef goes away and steal the pot and use that as a helmet without a walkthrough.

etc etc, i pretty much used the walkthrough that whole game it was that hard.

I agree about monkey island, that game was crazy, from what I remember of it. Great fun though, loads of character.

I would nominate Tokyo Xtreme Racer Zero, its easy until you get to the end, and then it just becomes impossible. I liked the little real time clock, and certain racers only came out at particular times, so you would need to go online in the middle of the night to be able to race them, or have certain mods on your car or whatever.

It was an awful game (its 12 years old), but I love it and still play it.

Ah blast corps.

Many a pad felt my wrath playing those godforsaken last few levels.

I also remember 'Z' being hard, although like you I think I was probably too young to play it properly.

Ninja Gaiden Black on the Xbox had some ridiculous moments too, in fact I actually gave up on that game.

Red Dead Redemption Undead Nightmare. Hardly any ammo around and a hell of a load of zombies that won't die unless you get a perfect head shot.

Driver, the original pc version. The storyline missions were actually quite fun, but you didn't find that out for ages because of the STAGGERINGLY difficult training mission irked Most games have easy training to get you into the swing of things, but this was a royal pee-take. To this day I haven't completed it myself, I always had to use the cheat to skip it, which I didn't find for ages.

Command & conquer Covert Ops - even using the sandbag loophole there's still a few I've never completed

Super Empire Strikes Back on the SNES

Silver Surfer on the NES, which has gone down as one of the hardest games ever made

The training mission was easy when you got the hang of it. I could do it with about 17 seconds to spare. biggrin

I was introduced to the PC game Angband ( link) when I was about 12 and thought it was really hard. I kept playing it through high school, college, uni, working life and still can't complete the sodding thing!

There are only 100 levels so it can't be that tough to get to the end?!?! Doesn't help that when you die you have to start again, but that's all part of the fun.

edit - oh, and Oni. Spend ages learning close combat kicks and punches. Get shot.

Homeworld Cataclysm.

They ruined that game from the original Homeworld by forcing you to hyperspace after a level rather than letting you take the time to rebuild your fleet.

It'd have worked fine if the AI which was supposed to adjust based on the condition of your fleet when you jumped in actually worked properly, but it didn't, so you got properly mullered.

Such a shame as it looked amazing and the original game was epic.
