If you preorder you get the deluxe version for the same price as standard so I've broken my number one rule .... This is my first preorder since Elite Dangerous and the first full price game I bought in a very, very long time !
The release date has been brought forward to next week.
Fingers crossed !

I cannot wait, though major case of paralysis on which class and race to go for. Thinking I might end up with two concurrent runs on the go as I really want to try the Dark Urge origin character and be as evil as possible. The release date has been brought forward to next week.

I enjoyed BG1 and BG2, even had a go on one of the remastered ones, but never really got back into it. I mean, in their time, them and the other D&D games were great, all the way from the Champions of Krynn series, COTAB etc, played them all.
But is a turn based combat game still relevant in 2023? I mean i loved it back 20 years ago, but games have moved on since then surely? I will probably buy it just due to nostalgia eventually, but I think it will need to be something special for me to play it through.... I mean its got loads of classes and races and even new ones, but how relevant is that to a game that you will probably only play through once, or at most twice...

It's a sure fire GotY contender, not sure what being turn based has to do with it, it's essentially the closest you'll come to playing Dungeons and Dragons on a computer, even 25 years ago for BG2 it wasn't that they couldn't do real time combat, it just doesn't fit the game. But is a turn based combat game still relevant in 2023? I played through their previous game Divinity Original Sin 2 and there's so much scope in the combat, stuff like spilling oil onto the floor and setting fire to it and watching them all burn.
Throw in the sheer scope of choices and endings and it would be an easy one to do multiple play throughs on, barring the massive time commitment.

To a (very) casual gamer like me turn-based, isometric is a huge part of the draw, add in a mythology & game mechanics that I'm reasonably au-fait with. I've no interest in FPS/platform/MMORPG or the playing style/mechanics of games like Assassins Creed. But is a turn based combat game still relevant in 2023? Surely making a game that caters to us nostalgia-players (& oldies) as well as newer players is a win?

Turn based is great just relax and plan what you are going to do. I've recently played BG1 and 2 on the iPad and they are still fantastic games even now. I would go as far to say if it wasn't turn based I may have given it a miss. But is a turn based combat game still relevant in 2023? I might have made a massive mistake however .... I've just started Divinity 2 and discovered it has cross save between iPad and PC ! Running side by side may confuse me

Sure, and it will be nostalgic, for sure. But it may well feel dated and that means i might get bored and not finish it. As i say i went back to BG remastered and the combat felt really, really old. As for playing D&D, yes i did that 30 years ago. I might even enjoy it now, but that had beers and friends, which BG3 doesn't.And i just realised after posting that sounds harsh, given i have not even tried it yet. As i say, i probably will, but certainly wont be buying the 'collectors' rip-off-the-rich-old-men-who-loved-it-years-ago edition.

I'm really torn now .... Which first Divinity 2 or BG3 ..... ?
If you've never played Divinity, then do so - it's a very polished, complete game at this point. Let's not pretend BG3 won't have some bugs/balance issues over the next few months that take some time to iron out! Like most these days, I suspect it'll be a much better game in 6 months time. The only thing that puts me off is the d&d rule set which I have no interest in or is so good that one can ignore that ?
Not sure why it would put you off, you've essentially got a sandbox of spells and possibilities to play with. You'll have a much harder time if you don't get creative with it and experiment with spells and abilities, as the combat is tough and you need any edge you can get.If anything the D&D rule set adds to it as you can often think of something and it will be possible within the bounds of the game. I'm sure there will be videos - just like in DOS2 before it - of people 'cheesing' boss encounters by utilising spells in ways most people wouldn't have thought of.
