From previous advice on here I have decided to go for 2 zoom lenses.
Id like to cover the widest angle and the furthest zoom I can but importantly get the best qulity I can afford.

Last night I looked through my newest Photography monthly and found
Canon 70-300mm III USM = £149
Sigma 24-70mm =~£149 (I think)

1. Would I be getting the best quality I could afford?

2. What are your recommendations for both lenses and where to buy them would be greatly appreciated. I live in Southern Hampshire.

Thanks.
(because I have never used that smiley before!)

Dusty,

I'm using a Tamron 28-300mm (f3.5/6.3) as a fairly general purpose lens:

www.jessops.com/search/viewproduct.cfm?PRODUCT=TAM2830035XRCAF&BRAND=TAM&CONTINUE=false&FEATS=&FIRSTPRICE=0&KEYWORD=&LEVEL=&MODELNUMBER=&NEWQUERY=True&NODE=143&ORD=ASC&ORDERBY=&QUANTITY=10&RECENT=0&REFINE=&SEARCH_FOR=&SEARCHNODE=0&SEARCHURL=dointellisearch.cfm&SECONDPRICE=999999&SHOWCASEID=&STARTROW=1&SUBS=52583,52764,263,256,0&WORD_SEARCH=N&

A shade under £300, to me, it seems a superb all rounder (ideal for motorsports with that range).

Can highly recommend it. It's also a decent size and weight so you can get away with not using a stand (although nearer 300m it is advisable).

I bought mine from Jessops when I purchased my 300D

On the other hand, I've "treated" myself and bought a Sigma 170-500mm (f5/6.3) for really long range (read motorsports!!) shots. Realtively cheap compared to the Canon range...

www.jessops.com/search/viewproduct.cfm?PRODUCT=SIG1705005ACAF&BRAND=SIG&CONTINUE=false&FEATS=&FIRSTPRICE=0&KEYWORD=&LEVEL=&MODELNUMBER=&NEWQUERY=True&NODE=143&ORD=ASC&ORDERBY=&QUANTITY=10&RECENT=0&REFINE=&SEARCH_FOR=&SEARCHNODE=0&SEARCHURL=dointellisearch.cfm&SECONDPRICE=999999&SHOWCASEID=&STARTROW=11&SUBS=52583,52764,263,256,0&WORD_SEARCH=N&

A couple of points:

There's a surprising difference between 28mm and 24mm.
Is max aperture important to you?

I'd say your selection is a good one.

I have been trying to go for the max aperture my money will get me but havent properly looked at Tamrons and Sigmas. Should I be looking at them more rather than Canons?

Are all the lenses considered to be the same robustness? I managed to damage my current canon lense with dust ingress in the desert.

Id like as wide as possible but cant afford wider than 24 mm I think. Prove me wrong and make me happy!

My other thread relates to me buying a Canon EOS300D. If I get the one which comes with a 24-55mm lense at least that would sort that problem out for me!

Fatsteve, that 500mm seems like a good price for what it is. Who is it quality wise? (not that I can afford it anyway!).

Maybe I've got the wrong end of the stick - has been known !

Is the 24mm digital or 35mm equivilant ?

Doesn't the 300D multiply by approx 1.6 ?

I am also looking at upgrading to digital format but from a 50E. Jessops have mentioned that my 28-80 will become something like a 44-130 when used on a digital body.

They recommended either the 18-55 and a 300D or something like the Sigma 12-24 and a 10D/300D

The factor depends on the size of the chip. For most DSLRs it's approx 1.5. Hence telephoto is easy and cheap but wide-angle is a pain!

You might be able to find a 'wide-angle convertor' for not much money that screws onto the front, but don't expect great quality.

NB Jessops list the Sigma 12-24 at £569.90 so you may want to think again!

Re Canon lenses vs independents, Sigma seem to be well respected - I think you get what you pay for, with a slight premium for the Canon name (as indeed any other big brand).

I've had a few Sigma lenses in the past (including the 170-500) and quality wise, they are good, but the Canon lenses are better (especially the L series, which feel like they're hewn from a solid chunk of metal and glass!), which really is what you'd expect when you compare prices. I've never used Tamron, so can't comment on what they're like, but from what I've seen they are similar to Sigma.

The 300D has a 1.6x crop factor, so the 24-55mm lens will equate to 38.4-88 in 35mm speak, the 24-70 will equate to 38.4-112 and the 75-300 will equate to 120-480.

Ed, bugger off. You cost me too much money!
(Although you have saved me more, got great shots with the tripod at the weekend thanks).

Would love an L series lense but not whilst they cost more than fitting Nos to the Griff!

I think it will be a decnet 75-300 Canon IIIUSM for now and then the wide angle when/if I get the D-SLR.

Well, if I can't spend my own money on lenses at the moment, I may as well try and spend other people's!!

Glad the tripod is coming in handy - you'll have to post up the results when you get them developed!!

Going for the 75-300 sounds like the best idea for now. Will you have it or the 300D in time for Le Mans?

The multiplier for Canon 300d/10d is 1.6, so a 20mm becomes a 32mm which is still quite a useful wide angle.

Have a look at the website www.fredmiranda.com and under reviews you will see how owners of the variouse lens rate the lens you are (maybe) interested in.

Sigma make some good lenses and for most of the time you would not be able to tell the difference in quality from the Canon equivelent, however there are times you can see the difference (big enlargments and contrast of the image, also some aberation issues). There is also quite a bit of badge snobery going on "the Canon must be better because its a Canon". At the end of the day if the lens you buy; does the job you want it for, costs the price you are prepared to pay, then it is the right lens for you.

Also.

Have a look at www.warehouseexpress.com, for some lenses they are cheaper than Jessops and for others they are not.

I have a 20mm Sigma lense and like it a lot for the image it produces, however I do not like the noise of the motor that drives it, in that respect my canon lenses are smooth and quiet.

www.parkcameras.com are even cheaper than Warehouse Express for some items.

Also, Amateur Photographer seems to be going through a phase of testing various lenses, so it may be worth keeping an eye out for articles testing the lenses you're interested in.

Another thing to bear in mind is how big and heavy these lenses are - not only do some lenses have a big price tag, but they'll also give you back ache as well!

Thanks for your help everyone. Really useful.

(BTW: I'll get the 300mm zoom in time for Le Mans and leave the wide angle till I get the Digital)

you cheeker (but accurate) fecker!

I almost forgot I was gonna get one and purchased from warehouse express due to their rapid delivery.

Ordered at lunch time yesterday and delivered in less than 24 hours.
Im impressed.

If my camera is still palying up with the new lense then Im gonna have to add a £749 "D" to my EOS300!
