HP ZR24w 24" Monitor Calibration Problems

Just upgraded to ta 24" monitor and changed no hardware or software other than swopping the screen over. Both screens connect via DVI or whatever the rectangular plug is (not the D shape one). I used colormunki on my old screen so that it was profiled workflow all through to the printer. Now when I profile the new screen it's marginally cold bluey/green and slightly darker visualy and compared to the profiled prints that I know are fine; PS5 and LR3 are right as are the prints. Using either Huey pro or colourmunki the result is the same. The only way to get it to look right is to factory reset the screen.

Any ideas? I've tried with and without HP's screen adjust utility and as above both calibrators; uninstall and reinstall too. HP and X-rite help are useless! So I turn to you guys!

Need some more info, what was your old screen, and what are the system details (operating system etc).

Also, what do you mean by Lightroom and photoshop being 'OK'?

The old screen was a Sony SDM-E96D also connected via DVI-D. The OS is XP Home, Intel Pentium running at 3.2Ghz, the display adaptor is a NVIDIA Geforce 7500 LE.

Both LR and PS CS5 are legit bought full copies and installed when the Sony screen was connected and are working fine. All printing is done via LR using Colormunki generated paper/ink/printer profiles. The printed images are true to a macbeth colour chart and x-rite passport I have. Its just the new screen thats out when calibrated, using either a colourmunki or huey pro but fine when factory reset.

So, same OS, hw and sw for both screens, XP, Graphics card, LR3 and CS5
same connection method - DVi-D
two calibration methods - eliminates a duff calibrator

I guessing I'm doing something wrong with calibration process / screen menu but for the life of me I can't work it out.


ETA yes I know its and old PC and I'm asking a lot! Replacing it is Q3 budget!

I have a 19" TN film screen (like your sony) and a 27" IPS screen (though it's wide gamut), and I find that even with both calibrated that mid grays and whites are a completely different colour when parked next to each other.

I did find that the new 27" screen always ended up darker than the initial setting when calibrating with the colormunki. I hunted for ages looking for a more tweakable piece of software that can use the colormunki, as the standard software tells you nothing about how well calibrated the screen is.

I'm slightly confused by your description of how things improve when you factory reset the screen, resetting the screen only alters the basic screen adjustments, much of the fine tuning is done in software using the videocard LUT, this wouldn't be altered by resetting the screen.

I take it you completely removed the colormunki/huey software between trying the different calibrators? I could forsee problems if they were installed at the same time.

Are you using the windows XP color contol panel applet? it appears to have some basic tools which may help diagnose the problem.

When trying to solve the difference in neutral greys between my monitors I found an opensource project called DispcalGUI which is the opposite of the colormunki software, it allows total control of the process, and allows you to run reports to find out how well calibrated the screen is. It is a bit of a pain getting it all set up, but I was a lot happier with the results it gave.
