which camera??

hi
new to this site and wondered if anyone with any knowledge or previous experience could point me in the right direction.I have normal dig camera and video recorder that i use to film my lad racing motox,but although the video is excellent for watching and using technically.Id like to have some action still shots of him also,but i need a digital camera that i can take of him racing or jumping at speed and has to take,crisp clear shots the instant i press the shutter.I know ill probably ned zoom lens etc,but wondered what make and models would suit me,without going into extreme professinal prices.

To be honest you will most likely be looking at going down the DSLR route to be taking action shots, most of the point and shoot and bridge cameras I have used or read about would have too much of a shutter lag.

It would be useful to know what budget you are working with and how close to the track you will be so we have a starting point.

thank you for the welcome,although after looking through the vast topics on here,i can see no work after ive fully recovered from op,and prob a split from girlfriend
I know itll be 2nd hand as know prices can go extreme,but i suppose around the £300-350 mark.But just dont want to buy something and then regret it as soon as i go to the track kind of thing.Or find that im way off budget for the kind of camera i need.

I would imagine you should be looking at maybe a Nikon D80 or Canon 400/450D for that money. Wiley Ebaying should see you get a body and reasonable zoom lens. It might also be worth investing in a monopod as it is unlikely you will be able to get an IS lens for your budget so camera shake may be an issue.

whats an IS lens,how close will i need to be to the track with a lens with that range zoom to not have him looking tiny etc,didnt realise so many aspects to it.I see now why theres a guy at the tracks with mega gear taking pics and then selling them to you by email or disc after the event.

I'd try to find a used 40d as I upgraded to one from a 350d.

I was missing out on alot of action shots because the shoot rate of the xxxd is too slow The 40d could take an extra frame or two a second and had a better buffer as well doing 17 shot bursts in raw format.

An IS lens has an inbuilt stabilisation system that helps to combat camera shake.
