Just about to take the plunge for an Ixus 500 from ebay and I noticed the decals on the front are powershot 500 not ixus 500. The spec and camera look the same, anyone know if there is a difference? I've a feeling that powershot may simply be the brand name in the US/Far East and Ixus in Europe? Anyone confirm this?

(If anyone is after one, just do a search - selling for £219 so even with carriage etc its a good £50 saving..)

I bought a Canon IXUS 430 for the wife at the weekend, it's the next one down from the 500 and shares all the features except for being a 4mp cam.

Nowhere on the camera does it say powershot, and from memory, the 500 i messed about with in the shop didn't either.

may well be an outside of eu cam sold here by mistake, or it may have had a production change and they are marketing the same cam in all countries.

as far as i know the cam is called

Digital elf (IXY) (japanese domestic market)
Digital IXUS (EU/Se asia)
powershot S (430/500 etc) (US market designation)

Bought a Ixus 500 as a b'day pressie for Mrs TDi yesterday. No mention of Powershot anywhere.

It's a fantastic piece of gear. Even shooting at 12x zoom, ISO 400 indoors without flash, the piccie quality was superb with very little noise.

O/T to my local Je***ps (no advertising !), for matching an internet only company and throwing in a 256 MB CF card (compared to a 128MB on the www ad) and case for only an extra £20.00.

Yup, thats the badger.. Chap on ebay has half a dozen and as they seem to be a lot chepaer than I can find in the UK, thought I'd take a look..

Next question, is it a point and shoot type or can I do more with it? I'm used to an SLR and the chap I talked to in a camera shop was less than enthusiastic about the Ixus. Reckoned it would take good snaps, but I could not do much more than point and shoot. The powershot A80 was suggested as a better camera, compact but still one I can tweak settings on..

It's mainly point and shoot.

There is a manual setting but that only really gives access to 'film' speed, white balance and the colour settings - B&W, sepia etc.

Still checking on that. You get a worldwide warrantee if you buy it in the UK, but it seems a surcharge of £40 if not.. Waiting to see that in writing..

Bought an Ixus 400 from J*****s beacuse at the time they were the only shop I could find with any in stock, but at the same time J*** L***s had them listed at ~£50 cheaper than anywhere else...

{edited to add:} In line with the general consensus, it mas my understanding that "Powershot" is the US-branding for Ixus models.
