Nikon D3100 or Canon EOS 1100D and lens Question

Hi

So I am looking to get my first DSLR. I currently have a very compact camera which I use for nights out but I want something for better shots, mainly for my forth coming child.

So I have found the D3100 and the 1100d are both highly regarded cameras. Does anyone have either of these and can offer their experiences.

Is it worth getting a VR/IS lens over non VR/IS version?

I suggest going into a shop like Jessops or Currys etc and actually holding both of the cameras. They are both good entry level dSLRs and both will do the job you're after (and will get you spending every single penny you own on glass!)

I have an EOS550d and I chose this over a similar Nikon because it felt better or more comfortable in my hands.
