What's this on my D40? Is it properly broken like?

A few days ago, this appeared on my photos - close up in the box:
(This was taken with the lens cap on to show it clearly)
More noticeable at 1600 ISO, but there at all ISOs and with all lenses - I'm suspecting a CCD problem, but I don't know for sure - any thoughts? Is my D40 knackered?

- I toyed with the idea of changing to another manufacturer, but I had 2 lenses and a flash that work with my D40 that should work with the D3100 (which I'm just about to go and turn on).Annoyingly, the battery is different so I no longer have a spare - I'll remedy that one quickly...

What I want to know is how I claim compo for having to find everyone else's compo but seemingly not be able to claim any compo myself. That can't be right can it? Can I claim compo for having to pay out so much compo when no one clearly advised me about the risk?

If you can work human rights and discrimination into that argument, you should get millions. Even more if you pretend to be foreign. But that will then come from MY taxes, so I will want a million as well.Simpo Two said:

But that will then come from MY taxes, so I will want a million as well. at the above.....I've just registered my camera for the 2 year warranty and was given the option for extra insurance for the camera: Extra 1 year warranty (to make it 3 years), accidental damage, theft - all worldwide and all for 3 years for £65.
Total no brainer.
(Currys had the same cover for £130 odd)
