Old undeveloped 35mm film roll: problems?

Boss at work has found half a dozen 35mm rolls at the bottom of a drawer, reckons it's been AT LEAST five years since he had these in a camera, just never been sent to be developed.

He put one roll into a local chemist to be developed and it came back blank - is this likely to be the same story with the rest of them?

Blank as in nothing?

or blank as not exposed??

I have had 35mm developed after 10 years and it has been OK

+1 on the above have had 10yrs+ film developed came out a little dark but otherwise fine

We talking colour or B & W ?

Are there many "chemists" about who can do these for you these days ?

5 years is nothing - but as suggested, had they been used? If they tail was sticking out they were new films!

Ah, the days of switching films from camera to camera by feel under the bedclothes!

Also having a change of plan, unloading an as yet unexposed film and going half a turn too far so that the tail was no longer sticking out. Then file and slowly forget what had happened. Re-discover some years later and wonder whether to process or not ...
